Simple self interest. Humans are special to humans other creatures are special to other creatures. Nothing wrong with such an approach.
Also from a practical point of view we can only have in depth communication with humans and for the most part can only have communication of any kind with humans. This allows us to form various social contracts with them which we can't arrange with the other creatures we have encountered apart from making selfless one sided concessions to their interests.
In sum humans are special because we can all relate to them on an entirely different level from any other things we might try to relate to.

tell me more about these special bacteria. I'm taking a refresher course in micro atm (damn taxonomy keeps getting tweaked) and to me it seems like their specialness is restricted entirely to interesting biochemical gadgets.

I'd just like to state for the record how I've never been more disturbed to be correct about an assumption in my entire life as I am right now in regards to orca porn.

The difference between humans and other animals is that human beings have documents.
