Lemme change this into a general complaint about Fox's treatment of shows. Firefly, whether you like it or not, was a pretty interesting concept. It get 11 episodes, which is far more than Fox seemingly gives other intriguing shows.

I've been watching "Wonderfalls" again on LOGO. What a wonderful show! But it was canned after 4 epsiodes! WTF?

And don't get me started on "Andy Richter Controls the Universe"!

They weren't thinking of not renewing the show for a 3rd season. People just got all paniced when Fox only ordered 18 episodes for Season 2 (because it was bad ratings for sweeps). During the whole time Fox said don't worry about it, but people got all up in arms.

I don't think Fox changed their minds at all. They know the value of having an Emmy winning show on their lineup. It's better advertising for them as a company.

Though they have moved it to Mondays, IIRC.

Sava's criticisms are perfectly reasonable but somehow I just loved Firefly.

Sometimes sci fi or fantasy worlds can be built around concepts that make no sense whatsoever but somehow it still works out to something that really entertains me. I'd say star wars likewise made almost no sense on multiple levels but somehow those movies rank among my favorite sci fi movies.

Oddly I find other some other movies with horrible 'science' like Armageddon totally unbearable as a result of these sorts of bad applications of science (or the complete disregard of the same.)

I've been watching the ends of stargate episodes on Friday just before the start of BG. It has indeed looked like a crappy show but the end of this weeks episode seemed interesting. maybe I'll intentionally watch the whole thing next week to see how it turns out.

Why not use a spinning space station? Anyway in B5 the earthlings didn't invent the space jumping tech, they gained access to the hyperspace or whatever through gate systems pioneered by older space faring civs who didn't need to spin their structurtes in space to have artifical gravity but also didn't see fit to transmit the particulars of that tech to upstarts like the humans (well not until near the end of the series anyway).

Tired of ads?

That's because it's superficial criticism. The characters, plot and story are all very compelling, so I personally don't give a rat's ass about quibbles over the technology of the guns used. Whedon is all about interesting, character-driven stories, and that's what Firefly is.

character-driven stories is the strong suit?

all the characters except for Adam Baldwin, suck...

there's the captain... a walking cliche... no sense of humor... loyal to a fault

the preacher... who I guess is some sort of uber-spy... YAWN

River... the idiot savant who, judging from the movie, is some kind of kung fu master...

the doctor... a wuss

second in command... not hot enough

a high priced hooker... most attractive female on the show, but an 8/10 at best

a 20 year old girl is the master engineer.... ya okay

who else?

oh yeah... the guy that looks like giovani ribisi... and he's not even in most episodes.

You pro-firefly dorks have no taste.

enjoy your crappy "sci-fi western"

Stargate and all its spin off are far worse as sci fi that Firefly.

The writing on Firefly was very good, and the effects are nice. The concept is not one I would go with, but in general it works in that given universe, which is not THAT advanced anyways. I don;t much care for Whedon, Firefly is the only show of his I liked enough to watch much.

I have never understood why so many people like Stargate. The characters are not that compelling, the bad guys are wimps, and the show is far too episodic.

Never have gotten into the 4400 at all, but Battlestar Galactica does blow every other show on Sci Fi away.

And B5 still rules the roost story and character wise.

Stargate is like a test for good taste.

It isn't good in the sense that EVERYONE will think OMFG THIS IS AWESOME. It's genius in the sense that smart people will find it hilarious and intriguing.

I mean, COME ON...

you got MacGyver... plus the whole concept from the movie Stargate... add in the somewhat butch, yet moderately hot Amanda Tapping, the probably gay and uber-buff Christopher (indeed) Judge, and Michael Shanks playing a better Daniel Jackson than James Spader... and you got yourself a formula for AWESOME.

And with Richard Dean Anderson gone, the show hasn't missed a beat with the dude from Farscape. Plus, Lexa Doig is hot.

How can you even compare this to Babylon 5?

I like B5... but it's not even close to touching Stargate's greatness.

Put an end to popups!

See, its called having different tastes. I simply don;t care much for Stargate, the characters, nor the overall plot.

Plus, I generally don't judge shows by the attractiveness of the actors. I don;t care how hot someone is, if their lines suck, I won't watch.

Personally I like the writing on firefly. I agree, Jane is a funny character, but I think all the characters save Book were done very well. As for River, of course someone who had thier brain openned up and experimented on would be odd. Seems to figure, actually.

I liked ST NG, but it has become old as well. I recently watched StarGate SG1 and this really sucks a lot. You can watch it and it's entertaining 50% of the time, but then there are the stupid characters with their real-life problems like fathers dying and this one ****s with that and what not... who wants to see that?
Probably they try to make them be more human when they show their personal problems, but that's just boring to watch and soooo badly done (extremely bad). And then there are the plot twists, that are just like: WTF?

I also followed Space 2063 a while ago. It had nice effects and battles, but as always it totally fails on the character side and that is where Star Trek, despite its age, still shines.

How many seasons has Charmed had now?

Syndication and popularity mean little.

Stargate is simply a low-talent rip-off of ST-TNG (which wasn't all that great itself, anyway). It has simplistic situations, inane attempts at humor, and some of the worst scripts imaginable. The dialogue I've heard coming out of that show is wince-worthy.

Anderson saved the show from being total crap by giving a good performance, but that's because he ignored the script and ad-libbed a great deal of the time. And when he did deliver the lines he had to, there was a sarcasm there (subtext: "I can't believe I'm saying this ****.")
