Pish posh.

Take all the tornadoes together and it's still less intense damage in a miniscule area as compared to even one hurricane. (Or earthquake, or wildfire.)

Midwest is the shiznit.

Its about over here. Not too much rain here, but even this far from the center the winds were impressive. I cant imagine what it was like trying to ride it out on the coast. We lost some shingles which will cost a few hundred dollars to replace but it looks like that was all. Strangely, the power stayed on except for a couple of bumps.

Life is inherently dangerous. There is no place on the Eastern seaboard that is safe from hurricanes. Even the Maritime provinces in Canada have been struck from time to time. Elsewhere in the U.S. has monster tornados, earthquakes, brush fires, blizzards, etc.

It's a statistical anomally that Florida has been struck by six hurricanes in the past 13 months (and several tropical storms). This is not normal weather, even during periods of peak hurricane activity.

Anyway, I don't see anyone telling dinodoc to leave Mississippi, even though his state has been struck by two of the most powerful hurricanes in the last 100 years: Camile and Katrina. No one tells SpencerL to leave Alabama, even though they had Ivan and Katrina.

Obviously, all of America has a dangerous climate. Move to France.

Its more than a few shingles so I may need a new roof. On the plus side, if thats true it's not so bad since it'll cost me as much for a new roof as to have it patched, the insurance deductible ($500).

Katie was a cat 1 hurricane when it made landfall. There was a gust up to 92mph in my nieghborhood. Miami-Dade got it much worse than us, but we got the highest winds in the South half of Broward. Nothing comapred to what she did to the Delta though.

Anyway, it turns out, in the last 40 years, Florida has been hit with a total of seven major storms (Cat 3 or higher): Betsy, 1965; Andrew, 1992; Charlie, Francis, Ivan and Jeanne, 2004, and Dennis, this year. Last year was unusual.

Full PM-box? Change here!

I told you guys about our vacation in Orlando last year didn't I? We had a condo booked the week that Charlie came through central Florida. When we set off from home we used the weather forecasts to plan our arrival slipping in between the two hurricanes, but our wagon blew it's transmission at the Georgia - Florida state line. We arrived in Orlando less than 20 minutes before Charlie hit only to find that my wife had left the instructions on how to get to the condo at home. We found our condo by blind luck, grabbed the luggage that mattered and closed the hall door just as the main winds hit the building.

The bbc is covering this in quite alot of detail - i caught the reports last night when i got home. It looks really terrible and i hope all the guys who are caught up in it get some help soon.
They were talking about the authorities worrying about food shortages in some areas and the effect that might have on looting etc. showed pics of many 'lost' looking people roaming around in water.

And some of the ariel shots were terrible, like whole cities under water(in missisipi i think?). Man that is going to take months to clear up.
Water is still rising in some places and the standing water is stinking apparantly.

At the end of the reports they moved onto an enviromental discussion and were asking the usa side of the discussion if events like this was putting more pressure on america to adopt more enviromental policies for industry etc.

Anyway i think if i was in an area that kept getting these storms i might be tempted to move(tricky selling your house i guess?).

Good luck to those in it

The things is, we don't keep getting these storms. What I keep trying to impress upon you people is this is unusal weather. The first two years I lived in Florida, we had one tropical storm. Nothing like this has ever happened before.
