DanS--our defense wasn't as bad last year as it looked last week. Last year (and the year before, and the year before that, and the year before that...), we mostly had trouble with running quarterbacks, and we were suspect against the big pass. We did not have trouble with running backs.

It was only your first game. Moreover, it was against a patsy. Ask yourself this: Is Notre Dame's offense as good as it looked last week, with 6 of the first 7 drives ending in TDs? My answer would be that it's not. First games don't determine the rest of the season...

Of course, as an ND fan, I still reserve the right to rub an ND win in your face, should you be correct. I just don't think you will be correct. Not that it won't be a good game...

I just saw the dumbest thing EVER! Marshall was down by 2 to Kansas State. They were trying to drive for the winning FG or TD. They got within the 25 yard line with 8 seconds left (1 Time out) and they call.... A PASS! It was tipped, KSU intercepted and Marshall took defeat from the jaws of victory.

Worst Call Ever.

I saw it as well. It took great restraint for both my wife and myself not to destroy the TV. not that we care too much, just the level of stupidity was amazing. And I do dislike K-state considerably.

Not quite the dumbest thing ever.

A couple years ago, in a I-AA game (I think), the following situation occured.

Team A trailed Team B by 5 with seconds left in the game. They scored a TD to go up by one with three seconds left. The coach then elected to go for the two-point conversion. Keep in mind that there were THREE SECONDS LEFT. The pass was intercepted and returned the length of the field for a 2-point defensive conversion, and Team B won by a point.

Eh... while dumb, I think it's less dumb than what Marshall did today. After all, it's pretty rare to have a pass intercepted on a 2 point conversion and having the team run it back all the way... even though there was no way the other team could have scored a FG.

That wasn't an easy FG that Marshall passed up; it wasn't unreasonable to try to get closer. Moderate risk, moderate reward.

There was no advantage, none whatsoever, in going for two in the game I saw. All risk, no reward.

I can only conclude that through some reason God actually did want K-State to win and did everything possible to make it happen in the end.

Yes, less dumb. It was LESS than a 35 yard FG! If you can't make a 32 yard FG, then you aren't a football team. It was totally unreasonable to call a pass. You have to know there is a possibility that it may be intercepted. You run the ball to the middle of the field, call time out and then kick it.

Running back an int on a 2 point conversion is something very rare so that move was less dumb.

Btw, you never figured on finding out what the point spread was on that 1-AA game, did you?

I thought you said they were at the 25yd line? That would be a 42yd FG.

That would make it considerably more dumb than if it were a 40+ yd, but still not as dumb as the thing I described.

Let us just agree that both are insufferably dumb.
