I dont think I need to but I'll make this one point.
AFAIK CNN was the first channel to note that the majority of the refugees are black. Not poor, not elderly and infirm, just black! Shortly therafter, the CNN commentary turned indignant about the situation, implying that it was somehow a racist plot. Next up for airtime, a leader of the black caucus who's indignant about the term 'refugee' to describe the (mostly black) evacuating population. At that point I knew that the good news coverage had ceased and the whining had begun so I changed channel and havent been back.

In some ways, Geraldo is a throwback to the days of Yellow Journalism, when standards weren't as high, everyone got involved in taking sides, damn objectivity, and even had a hand in starting a war (the 1898 Spanish-American one, if my journalism history memories are correct). Those days may be making a comeback and I, for one, *don't* welcome them.

Yeah, because the "professional" journalism thing of the past 25 years has done such a great job.

One thing I've observed over the years is that folks with agendas tend to never like what they see, read or hear. They then trot out the old, tired cliches of:
1. The media is controlled by its corporate overlords who dicate newsroom policy right down to the paperclips.
2. The media is controlled by its liberal overlords who dictate newsroom policy right down to the paperclips.
3. The media is controlled by its Jewish overlords who dictate newsroom policy right down to the paperclips.
4. The media is controlled by its ...
Well, you see where it's going here, don't you, Che? I believe you, more often than not, like to use No. 1 when there's something out there you don't like because it clashes with your ideology.
I'm not saying journalism is perfect — how can anything be whose origins rest with humans? But what cannot be denied is that journalists are often used as punching bags by those who have real agendas and, more often than not, they simply absorb the blows without complaint because, if they did complain, it'd "prove" this or that about so and so "biases."
And don't even get me going on how often commentators and columnists — who are not journalists in the purest sense of the word — are often mistaken as the real thing. They're opinion types, which is why they appear on the editorial pages of newspapers and on TV/Web talk shows.
They also make a lot more money than Joe and Jane Reporter who cover city commission meetings and write investigative pieces.

Let's put it this way. With your "professionalism" these days, there's no way Woodward and Berstein would be allowed to uncover Watergate. The 70s were a golden age for journalism, but once it became "profesionalized" it started going downhill.
I think there are two major problems with the media today, first, they're cowards. They are too afraid to challenge public authorities, except when it comes to sex or the evidence is overwhelming and has already been gathered for them by someone else. The are afraid because they don't want to lose their access. They are afraid to go after corporate criminals, because they don't want to piss off their advertisers and they are afraid to be sued. Profit is more important than the public's right to know.
As for corporate interference from the top, I know it exists. Look at what happened at the San Jose Mercury or the Fox news affiliate in Tampa. NBC never says anything negative about GE, ABC about Disney, etc. Journalists who don't tow the line find themselves without work.
Do they dictate everything? No, they don't have to. Journalists self-censor.
I don't care whether the media is left-wing or not. What I want is for them to have some balls and do what they promised, "Aflict the comforatable and comfort the afflicted."

Geraldo, on his Sunday show on fox, showed tape of him going into people's house and helping carying people in wheel chairs out of their houses into helocopters. I started to laugh at Geraldo when I saw that. Geraldo is too much, but he is good to watch for a good laugh some times.

Odds are that Sik's story about Rather isn't true, and even if it was, one person making one mistake is hardly proves that the entire media was terrible.
