Almost forgot to respond to this, but better late than never.
In a roleplay sense (and we're talking about RP games here), what type of paladin would make buddy-buddy with a thief and cutthroat? That would be against the lore, and a lawful good character (paladin) does not fit too well with a chaotic, evil (or even both!) rogue.
I played the official campaign with a female dark-elven assassin and had Grimgnaw as henchman, ya know, that lawful evil monk from the Order of the Long Death. That was great fun in RP sense. We killed the whole Neverwinter, except those characters, which are immune, including all sattelite areas.
But this type of game, albeit fun, has a downside - it is too easy. Since rogues gain levels quick and henchmen level with the main character, all challenge went down the gutter quickly. In the mid of chapter 2 I hit level 12 (and Grimgnaw too) and there was no foe who could withstand his might longer than 5-10 seconds. It became boring, because too easy, and I ditched that game.

Call it what you will. I like RPGs for the tactical elements, and I couldn't care less about whether my paladin would or wouldn't 'want' to group with a rogue. Let's face it, grown men role playing elves and orcs is a little silly. |
By "tactical elements" you probably mean ignoring one game setting (alignment). There are D&D rules (mostly for board games though) out there, which even forbid you to form parties with alignments, farther than one step from yours. So as lawful good character you could group with another lawful good, a neutral good and a lawful neutral character, maybe a true neutral, but that's it. That NWN has not implemented alignments the way they should be is for sure one of its shortcomings.
Besides, I am probably about twice your age and still like a light roleplay, so I must be completely silly . For instance in Civ3 I used nuclear subs with tactical nukes, even though they move slow as hell and don't make much sense. And I play MMORPGs according to the lore; I would never play a dwarven wizard or a dark elven paladin.
