Civ is just a long game of chess. It's so addictive there should be a warning on the box. I hate to think how many hours of my life I'll spend on Civ3 (assuming it's any good).

All games are imbalanced. However, chess is very balanced but imbalanced nonetheless. White does have the advantage of the extra move, but its effect is marginal because it is counterbalanced by the fact that white has about half a dozen good first moves if (s)he's skilled enough to use them wisely, and after that black usually has many ways of responding, determining where the center of action will be during the middle game and perhaps who will have the advantage in the end game.

As for your problem, I don't know why that happens. Is 70% an exaggerated estimate or the result of actual playing and recording. Or do you just really like to play black? I myself find black winning about 50% of the time.

Absolutely. I couldn't agree more! Yeah, it's chess on a massive map with differing squares, with the ability to make pieces and upgrade them. Chess is undoubtedly the best game of all time, because only the best win. Pure skill. Civ2 has got to be about the next best thing. After all, it's chess on steroids, so it's a given
