Somebody (Henrik? ) was working on a Mars scenario that featured dust-beds IIRC.
That'd be a fairly old thread though...

WWI-Style Monitor? Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations

Has anyone ever made an icon of a WWI RN monitor?

Just prior to WWI, Fisher resurrected this term in the British navy for a type of bombardment vessel. They looked almost comical: big battleship or cruiser gun turrets on a 600-6000t boat. Big tripod to match. Tiny funnel - usually couldn't make over 10 knots. They seemed pretty popular with the campaign planners.

Here's a pic.

Perfect! The Erebus was completed in 1916. Didn't realize that a few of these relics served in WWII.

That's true, but that's not the reason the images appear blurred.

If you save your images as JPEG you must have several options somewhere as to what image quality you want. Since JPEG is better at encoding smooth gradients than sharp edges, CorelDRAW probably has an optimization setting to slightly blur the image (and thus further reduces filesize). That might not be a problem for photos or so, but is a problem for Civ2 imagery.
You should be able to adjust these settings either when saving or in the general program preferences.

In any case, if you want accurate lossless images (like with Civ2 graphics, much less so with screenshots) use PNG or GIF (for Civ2 GIF is preferable since that's the format Civ2 uses itself).

Beautifull units! Woa, I wasn't expecting the railroad monster-gun in the last row. I was just reading about it yesterday. The reich built just two of them, I can't recall their names. They blew the sevastopol forts to bits, but since they were more like battleships on weels, they never lived up to the initial expectations (too cumbersome and expensive to operate, only fired a couple dozen of rounds). A really crappy investment. Both got captured by the soviets.

I don't think that railroad gun is the Dora, tanelorn. It is too small, and the Dora, of which you speak, needed two parallel railroads to move, I only see one... BTW, IIRC, only one Dora was deployed by the 11th Army (Manstein). Also, the second was later deployed by Kesselring in Italy.

This drawing of it gives a rather good impression of its scale:

It used 800 mm shells!

I'd guess the railroad gun above is either one of the WWI French or German ones. (?)

Furthermore, see this drawing for comparison with the unit above:

Suffering from ads?

One thing you could do is talk the admin into deleting old post that do not have graphics. Another thing that just popped into my head is have people go back through and edit their obsolete posts to reflect that status. Both of those would take quite a while though.

Having a set of different threads for different types of graphics is an idea. Perhaps posts discussing the units could be deleted a week after they're made?

BTW Curt: I don't think that I did much (if anything) to the unit you've given me partial credit for. From memory it was made by BeBro.

If it hasn't been done already, these gfx are in desperate need of compilation into downloads. I'd agree with Case, the conversation has less longterm interest than the pics. Once we agree on categories, I could help with some. What would work best: icon type, era, artist(s)?

Has anyone made an icon of a WWI Holt Tractor? This would be for an improvement, not an unit.
