It certainly depends on the map size.

1-5? Sure sounds like a lonely game.

If every screen is up to it I'll play 10 civs, no more. That ensures that UN votes will be hard to get.

Put an end to popups!

My vote went with 1-5. Altough prehaps 3-7 would be a better category... That's 3-7 civs, not AI's.
Call me boring but I prefer games with large well developed civs.
(Also my computer is an old dungclunker)

I plan on playing with either 8 or 16 civs, depending on whether enough last beyond the ancient period to present a challenge. In Civ 2, i rapidly ran out of foreign civs, so it really depends on how good the AI is as to whether i play 8 or 16 civs.

I chose 9-12 civs, the option in between

On average 9-12, but I'll certainly try 16. Anyway it depends on map size and how long I want a game to last etc.

12 is good enough for me as long as large enough maps are provided with the game.

I will play only with 6-8 civs on standard or small maps because I do not have the time for the big maps.(job, girl friend ...)

And I don't like to control hundreds of cities and units. I like more when every city is important. Much more interesting, much more fun.

Good points - small maps rule when you are short of time.

Hey, if you want 50 cities, then that 256x256 map is just for you.

But for the 180x180 map, it may be even more than that, since I just guessed that 30% of the world would be inhabitable. Also, when I divided, I assumed there would be no overlap, so with an ICS strategy, its likely that you'll easily be able to place 50 cities on a 180x180 while still leaving plenty of room for the ais.

Anyway, 29 cities/civ is just too much for me. I don't like to have more than 15-20 cities myself. If the computer will expand into all the space I provide it, then it'll be fine, but I wouldn't want a large gap between my empire and the enemy.

In SMAC I tend to stick to a limit of 10 bases, never more than 20 'proper' bases, I may have additional fringe / captured bases which perform menial tasks, but I usually give away captured bases to trusted allies.

I plan to play much the same way in Civ3.
Also, keep in mind that chances are Civ3 will have some anti-ICS measures, that could limit expansion as much as available land.

If Civ3 has reduced the amount of micromanagement needed I figure the more cities the better.

Same here. Maybe taking on 15 other civilizations simultaneously will actually be a challenge.

Wait until all 15 of them have nuclear weapons then declare war on all of them.

50 cities? That's smack of ICS.

It seems like ICS has been dealt a severe blow by the Civ 3 design team.

Good luck pulling that.
