It's a good question, but there is too much steam whistling out of some ears. I never played CtP2, but I did buy CtP1. Here is what I think. Plus (+) is for Civ3, Minus (-) is for CtP.

+ So far, Civ3 is more fun to play. I have no idea how long lasting that fun will be, but so far, so good.
- I much preferred the PW system. It makes more sense, and if Firaxis is as committed to "streamlining" the game as they claim, then that would be the way to go.
- The graphics of CtP were far superior. The units in Civ3 are nice, but the terrain of CtP wins hands down.
- CtP introduced Bombardment. Let's give that to them.
+ Culture is an original Civ3 concept, and it works great. If cities resist, then that's because the opponent is superior, or you are not doing your bit to convince them that you are the one and only.
- Combat in CtP was better. Stacked combat makes more sense, is more realistic and more fun. Only better example I have seen is in Conquest Of The New World.
+ Air Combat in Civ3 is great. Best I have seen.
- CtP had wondermovies. Sure, it's not a make-or-break issue, but were talking about our hard earned cash.

It's a shame the CtP series have been scrapped. They did have a lot to offer.

OK here is my list about CTP2 again - for CTP2 and +for Civ3:

+an editor for easy modding
+probably less bugged than CTP2, but you can expect more support
-no scripting language for modders and scenario makers available like slic in CTP2, that allowed me to implement the city destroy feature (after city capturing)
- so civ3 is less moddable than CTP2
-no future: why thinks FIRAXIX the civilisation ends in the present
-and finally no Civ3 in German language version available right now - but in March 2002 so I wonder if they started the translation yesterday.

Put an end to popups!

its sometimes just the small things that makes a game really good.

You do know, that when the pop number is red, that means that there's a food shortage.

And I like putting laborers on tiles. I know that there's a certain level of abstraction needed, but CTP went too abstract for my tastes - you had no real control over your city's production, except messing with your specialists, whose effects were barely noticeable.

That is a stupendously idiotic thing to say. If you haven't played it yet, how do you know it needs to be patched, or that it needs to be returned?? Play it yourself and make up your own damn mind.

Well, you got some points, but IMHO resources do not have a heavy weight in implementation, although they deeply affect gameplay. Then I am not sure if I like the effect of scarse stategic resources. Again, I like the culture stuff, and the overall game.

Yes, CivII was conservative too, but I do not know which gap was closer:1-2 or 2-3? SMAC was far more innovative! I play it these days, I like it. You may hate it, but at least concede that it was (IS!!!!) more innovative.

I only have one thing to say, Civ3 is the most addictive game I've ever played, and CTP2 was crap until WesW came into the picture and fixed everything!! Everything all of you are complaining about are things that Firaxis deliberitley changed, and thngs that most of the hardcore civvers here at Apolyton really wanted. It comes down to this, if you don't like the game, don't play it!!!
