Slaw means Word.

This may be true, but I don't see how it is exclusive with the English word slave originating from Slav, which in turn has its roots in Slaw.

Slave: from Mediaeval English, sclave , from Old French, esclave , from Provencal esclau identical with the ethnic name Sclavus SLAV, the Slavonic races having been reduced to a servile state by conquest. Hence SLA.V ery. Source: The Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology.
It may sound pejorative, but it simply reflects the trading practices of people such as the Vikings, who would ship slaves from Russia and Finland (yes, I know they're not Slavs) overland or down river to slave markets in Baghdad along with furs, ivory and amber, in exchange for the Arab bullion and rock crystals and other trade goods found in many Scandinavian Viking graves. I shouldn't take it as an insult, the Dutch come off much worse in English phraseology: Dutch courage, Dutch auction, Dutch uncle, Double Dutch....and they were our allies!

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Look at the Slavs come out of the woodwork to "defend their honour".

Oh, and some people here have bass-ackwards reasoning. I didn't say that "Slav" comes from "slave"; I said that "slave" came from "Slav".

Don't be so friggin' sensitive. I hardly own any Slavic servants any more.

Slaw means Word.

Rather "Famous"
Boguslaw=famous to be pious
Wladyslaw=famous of his rules
Etc.
It doesn't work with "Slav" enlightens...

Well, that's exactly why I said that the word Slav coming from Slaw is not mutually exclusive with the word slave coming from the word Slav.

I think I am deeply insulted. I will sue you for xenophobia and racism. Then I will proceed to extract vast amounts of reparations from the Arabic and Western nations for enslaving my ancestors several hundred years ago.

Rather like some activists are trying to do with the US.

...To the U.S., and Britian, and France, and Spain, and the Dutch, and the EU (which wasn't even around back then)... Do you notice that these "activists" aren't talking about the Arab slave traders or the African slave traders who all had big roles in the slave trade. I guess they only want reparations from rich countries so poor but guilty countries get to walk away Scot-free.

Exactly, I think it's plain ridiculous. What the heck, think how long ago slavery was abolished. Just how far back are we prepared to go to compensate for crimes of our ancestors against ancestors of others? Maybe, we should ask for compensation from the Mongols for their invasions under the Genghis Khan.

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

So with my Polish background, am I entitled to reparations when they get enacted sometime down the road? I can trace all my problems directly to the fact that my ancestors where held as slaves! No lie! No, really!
