Say what? There's no reason at all to build obselete units if you have the technology for better ones, especially in this case.
Ironclad - 4/4/3, 4 bombard, 1 range, 2 ROF, 80 shields
Battleship - 24/20/4, 8 bombard, 2 range, 4 ROF, 200 shields

Whoops, I was using the unit appendix in the manual. Still, it's twice as effective at bombarding and 2.5 times as good or so at fighting.
