US high school propoganda (a.k.a. "history") classes teach that the English happily and peacefully settled vast amounts of mysteriously empty land. The Spaniards crushed the poor, peaceful Carib, conquered the Aztecs and Incas, then sent countless shiploads of silver and gold back to Spain. The cruelty! The theft! |

JB had asked what US schools teach, iirc. This is what is (used to be?) taught thru the high school level.

Maybe all has changed. When I was in high school, all of this was glossed over, swept under the rug. University classes taught what really happened, but not mandatory school levels. In 1995, a highly influential book, Lies My Teacher Told Me, by D. Loewen, shook up how history was taught. Maybe the effect was truly to change propoganda-laden civics classes to actual history. I was long out of university by then, so I wouldn't know if/when such a change occured.

As said, I attended high school in the US. And yes, I was america bashing! However, I do so in a positive spirit. As long as such problems are ignored, nothing is done to correct them. Acknowledging faults is half the task of eliminating them.

Another thing to take into account is perhaps location. I do not know where you grew up (land o lakes, perhaps u’re from Michigan by the great lakes?), but in the northeast where I attended high school and attend college, content is a lot more liberal than say, in the south or Midwest. After all, it was only a few years ago in Kansas that they were still arguing over the topic of evolution ..

yo-
I would say that it is far more interesting.(hablando de la primera)
I am quite sick of ww2,
in the history channel
all they have are documentals about ww2 or american history.
It should be callee american history channel,
i think that they have more documentals about the hoover dam
than documental about ancient egypt.
The History channel sucks only in Argentina or it sucks worlwide?
Me respondieron-
As far as the history channel: Yes it does focus more on American history. What a shock, their main market is Americans. They aren't running a service, they are trying to sell GI Joe's with a Kung Fu grip. That and CIV3 (I actually saw a commercial for it). I have heard that there is a history channel international. Maybe that would be more to your taste. Perhaps you should start a history channel South America if there is a market for it.
I'm not trying to be an @SS, but I guess I don't know what you expect from a for-profit company other than to do its best to drive up advertising revenues.

Well, two things:
(1) The History Channel deals mostly with American history because, uh, it is an American cable network. If you are interested in starting an Argentine History Channel, perhaps you can get together a group of investors to do so, but good luck.
(2) The History Channel deals more with WWII subjects than WWI subjects simply because there is far more footage (newsreels, still pictures, etc.) and primary sources (e.g., interviewees) available to talk about it. This point is so obvious it is almost embarassing to state.
Sorry to stray off topic here. Carry on.
