They're pretty close to final. Keep in mind that the original Civ (and to a lesser degree, Civ II) had a very light-hearted tone. We're trying to recapture some of the wit and fun attitude that the original Civ had, so you'll see that reflected in the leaders and some of the other parts of the game.

Errmm... please don't make it excessively "funny" though. Every now and then I get an urge to play the evil emperor (Give in to the dark side of the Force, MUAHAHAHA!) If my colleague leaders act like comedians, the illusion is somewhat hard to maintain.

Thanks Dan and great work, Firaxis!

I'm very happy with the new, extended and (I hope so) better diplomacy. I said "better" because I hope that other (even if not all) AI civs won't hate me only because I am the NO.1. I'm hoping in no more sneaky attacks from peaceful civs, or "now I love you, next turn I hate you" attitudes.

Question: are there more new diplomatic agreements, in addition to those from the site (mutual protection pact, right of passage agreement, and trade embargo)? I'm very curious if Civ3 will have (or not) treaties between more than 2 countries, like trade/science/political unions (European Union), military unions (NATO), multiple alliances, and so forth.

Keep up the great work and give us the best CIV game ever!!!

No one seems to have any concern about how military maintenance will be implemented, but here is my question:

Will military maintenance be on the national, civilization level, or will Firaxis make the mistake by keeping it at the individual city level, like they did in Civilization I and II?

Suffering from ads?

Very encouraging and am highly acnticpating;

The terrain system is completely new and we think it's the best-looking terrain that has ever been seen in a Civilization game. We're not quite ready to show it off yet, but to answer your question, terrain features will definitely not be flat. You will also see combat benefits depending on the terrain you occupy when you attack or defend. Stay tuned, as we will be talking about the terrain in more detail very soon

Tired of ads?

I care nothing for the graphics, they are needless, resource-wasting bells and whistles, but alas, I understand people's attraction to them. Some folks think how the game looks is just as important as how it runs.

However...

the diplomacy model is absolutely stunning (isn't that what's more important than the reactions on some pre-rendered graphics?). If the diplomacy model can be pulled off without bugs, than that might be worth the price of Civ3 alone.

Terrain graphics are very important to me. With civ2, I enjoyed repeatedly creating new maps just to find the coolest looking starting point. I always tried to find areas with organized mountain ranges with rivers running out of them and into vast grasslands, etc. Alpha Centauri didn't have mountain ranges jutting out of the landscape, but rather just some elevated red terrain. Of course, gameplay will be the most important part of Civ3, but I'm dying to see some cool, realistic-looking terrain.

I REALLY like the bargain table, this will make the negotiations MUCH more realistic and interesting.

I got a question about the diplomacy model. Does it have the ability to share partial maps? For instance in civ 2 each island is given a id by the map generator engine. Would it be possible in when negociating with another civ to say i will give you 100 gold for the terrian map of island #6 ?

Dan, rest assured that I have a much more feeble system (and Civ's the only game I play, so there'll be no upgrade since my Pentium 200 MMX/64MB suffices for writing emails and papers.) What's the hope of my computer handling the game???

Put an end to popups!

Am I the only one to who have noticed the pimple/birthmark that is situated in the same place on both Elizabeth's and Mao's faces?
I wonder if all leaders will have a birthmark there (Abe could have one behind his beard)?

I enjoyed the random disasters that Civ I had and I hope they are brought back in Civ III. I remember those fun moments when an occasional earthquake would destroy my city walls just before it was going to be attacked!

However, can the "cure" for disasters be made a little more reasonable? How the blazes does a temple stop a volcano anyway? Some of the other ones seemed a bit absurd as well. Many of the disasters should not have a "cure" for it at all. If it happens, you're simply out of luck. And in cases where there is a "cure", maybe it can reduce the effects of the disaster instead of eliminating it entirely.

Henrik, you might be on to something here...the birthmark could possibly be the trademark of the artist...or could just be coincidence. We'll know for sure after we see all of the leaders

Drool? I'm positively salivating!!

The diplomacy model is brilliant, and just a tad lighthearted, which is what it should be. If they don't look angry enough at the extreme, just make their faces a bit red to get the seething look right. Of course, for someone like Hitler, his "happy" face should be more ridiculous than happy, and certainly in an insane kinda way! The "angry" face should be positively menacing, though.

As for the graphics, just ask yourself - "if the game itself was changed, but the same engine was used as in Civ2, would you fork out 50 bucks for it??" Better still, if you don't care for graphics, why not play it in code! I don't think you would find anyone to play against

Oh, and please oh please include BUILD QUEUES!!! However, the city mayor sounds promising, although it better be better than the auto-queues in Civ2

Oh, and as for natural disasters, i asked the Civ3 team already. They didn't answer the question, though. Maybe next month? IMHO, they won't have it in, which is a pity, because i have the whole model already in my head!

The inclusion of the leaders screen is a definite plus! And Dan said it right. The original civ did score points for having the light-hearted element.

If that random disaster thing can be included, it'd be nice.
