uh the same happened with 1.171f...
anyone s got a solution?
I ve checked civfanatics...and found that post. it's not a fix. ...anyone got a solution to this one?

here is a post at CivFanatics...
xxxx
Attention: This fix requires forethought and a general clue.
In the registry, their is a CD_Path key. If you don't put the CD in that drive, or don't have a CD at that drive letter, the program bombs.
Note: It is 2002 - get with it guys, people add drives and stuff on occassion - I have yet to have another program fail on me because I run the CD from a different drive letter than where it was installed from...
xxxx
how do I fix the bug? which registry?
I AM running it from the same drive!

I have just installed the latest patch and started a new game.
First town I build on grassland (no rivers or bonuses) produces a
city tile with 3 commerce. Eh ?? It used to be 1 if I remember correctly. Is this a bug ???
Do I have to uninstall the game, re-install it and then install the latest patch ????

uh yes I tried to start it from the cd...it goes 'loading' then gives a missing bwink32.dll ...a file that i wasn't able to find anywhere...
but this dll missing...made me think of a incompatibility with windows 98 (NOT SE)

I don't know about bwink32.dll but I know there is a binkw32.dll
In fact I seem to have four copies of the thing on my system, Civ3, Black&White, Star Trek Bridge Commander all have their own copy. Bink is the movie format I think. The dll file is on the CD under the "bink\W2K" directory.
RAD Game Tools you can download the movie viewer / maker thingee but as far as I can tell the dll file isn't there. Maybe rename the .bik movie files so it doesn't try to play them or get the dll file from somewhere and put it in the Civ3 directory? Haven't had teh problem before so just a guess.

Did you install the Bink viewer to watch the Security Briefing Easter Egg? I had this problem once and uninstalling the viewer helped with it. I may have also reinstalled CivIII but I don't remember.
I now have the Security Briefing renamed to replace the opening movie. The game starts up a little faster with the smaller file.

I had problems with the 1.21 patch, similar to the problems I had when I installed 1.17. I got the spalsh crash, or no video, or if I removed the movies, I got buttons with no text in the opening screen.
After uninstalling, reinstalling, and repatching, it still didn't work.
Here was my workaround (just like my last splash crash workaround):
Installed patch.
Replaced exe with nocd exe (and yes, i have a retail disc)
REBOOTED
This last step is important. I get garbage without the reboot. Now everything works fine again, except for the Civ Placement Tool, which is incompatible with the new save game format. Doh! No more kittenworld mod for a few days... Sigh.
Let me know if anyone has problems.
