So can you take part in both PBEM and online?

sure !
for online gaming you just need to install the file "servers.dat" from this site here (go www.apolyton.net -> Call to Power -> Download, look for a search field and type the name "servers.dat", you will get two results, the first one is it), unzip it into ."\CTP\ctp_program\" and/or ".\CTP\ctp_program\ctp\" (i always do both, cause i always forget where it belongs ). overwrite any existing servers.dat files.
if your basic version isnt already CTP 1.2, you should also install the patch 1.2 (go Apolyton download page as above -> Patches and then select the appropriate 1.2 patch for your preferred language.)
after you got these basic files you can play online via the Call to Power main menu in the game.
there is a menu point called "Multiplayer". if you have an active internet connection, click that button, select (usually) "Internet".
after a few seconds (if everything works) a list of two servers should appear.
log in to the one with more players shown for it, or simply the one you prefer. most often there will be 0 players there though, unless you specifically appointed to meet someone there (usually via this thread or per email, or ICQ if you and the other person both use it).
type in your player name (no need to create a complete profile) in the menu that appears.
after a few more seconds, you should get access to the 'lobby', a chatroom for starting games, on that server.
you can play around with the menu there to get familiar with it (though be aware that the miscellaneous named lobbies arent really distinct according to my experience) or if someone is there directly chat with him.
online gaming often cause some connection problems that happen sometimes and have to be sorted out, especially if you are behind a firewall and/or are using Windows 2000Pro. not sure about XP, NT or whatever.
i have Win2000Pro and always get "Pro"Blems.
hope i could help you.
and yes, of course, you can play both online and PBEM, just not switch one game between two modes, if you meant that.
depends on your preferences, the time(s) you can spend on your PC, etc...
