Increase Your PM Length

I would say higher than that depending on what system you use.At least 2400 FIDE methinks.Although my skills have deteriated,my last published rating was 2308 CFC which is around 2450 USCF..not sure FIDE equivelant..close to CFC system.Julius has had little difficulty dispatching me ...2 and 9/10 times now

I've given it some more thought and I am just insulting you at this point.I concede the win to you.Good playing as usual.I need a bigger hammer to dent this rock.

0-1

I hope we can play again soon.
Thank you for the game

Thanks for assuming, I would play 49 ... Rxb3
It is indeed lost after 50 ... Rb1, you will only stop the pawn at the price of the rook and your own pawns are not dangerous enough.
I don't know who's the next challenger

I am going to disapoint you, I am rated just under 2050 swiss elo points Let's make it 2100 fide
But as I said quite a few times, my nerves are my worst ennemy with my lack of practice. I was a promising junior with a deep understanding of piece play and a talent for original plans.
Lack of focus, lack of ambition, and lack of practice have kept from improving my rating. I even stopped playing for 10 years and I am about to do it again. I
I am good, I could've been great, but I only wanted to be one of the best, and some weaknesses would not allow it. Call me an underachiever and a very bad loser I've never played more than 20 games a year : it takes me so much time to recover from a loss

Ughh! I haven't played Chess in over a year.

And what about you Carolus, what is your rating

I would say that Smash looks like a strong practical player to me, the kind that would pressure me and compell me to make mistakes over the board, due to stress, complicated positions and lack of time to find the right move.
But I am enjoying this postal chess, where my weaknesses are more easily covered and where my positional understanding can help me (I'm not showing off : many players have told me I was really good at finding plans and putting pieces at the right place)

I think what helped me most in this game are 2 things :
1) the psychological effect of Smash "fearing" me
2) Smash playing too fast. He had me on the ropes, or at least had some edge and he didn't take time enough to improve his position and weight the choices. He always answered in a few hours.

That said, I am proud of my careful plan to break on the queenside and patient and cruel waiting moves to reach the most unfavorable position for the white pieces. Yes I learned chess by looking at Karpov's games

2100 FIDE?..I should be crushing you like a bug

Obviously, you play several hundred points higher in this format.

Yes I have some head problems.Ever since you posted your first thoughts back in Smash/Carolus1.I remember thinking "uh oh"
btw-I still think my move was better

While I posted fairly quick at times, what you don't see is the hours of analysis I put in.When you make the move I anticipated,I can move quickly in theory. You are right though, there is no time clock.Take advantage of that.

I did have a good pull there for abit but I chickened out of more complications at move 14,15 etc.

Its a good thing I have no such difficulty recovering from a loss ..heck I'm ready to go again allready.I must be a glutton for punishment

There must be one among us who can slay the dragon....

Put an end to popups!

Well, not much of a new challenger, maybe an old one will come back to fight again
Should I post a challenging thread, or just wait for someone to defy me once again

As for trying serious postal chess, I am not sure : one game already takes so much time
If I was to do so, I think I would go to the swiss federation, official stuff and all, with the secret but not possible dream to become world champion
(I've always been more ambitious than able )

I don't know. You may have frightened all the would be challengers away

Perhaps Carolus has another fight in him. There was much doubt in that last encounter.

RHP is pretty neat.No worries getting a game. All manner of skill levels..and....free ..but yes, time must be managed. All of a sudden I have 3 games going there, combined with the CF tournament.....I sit in front of a board alot lately

Well, this cannot be done by one man.
I thought one was already a burden

But the more you play, the better chances you have to climb the ratings. It is always this way with the Elo

Beleive it or not,its a woman!!!..apparently, a well respected member above any kind of suspicion.

She does have a lot of losses though.I guess she took a quantity over quality approach

She also dropped like a rock out of top spot

I'll pass for now, too much work to do (read: too much soccer to watch)... So go ahead, Smash (or anyone else for that matter)!

As for my rating, it was way too humble to deserve a mention in this fine company. I started playing competitively (in a club) when I was 12 and stopped at the age of 20 (I'm 32 nowdays). Mostly because I went to university after finishing my military service and didn't have the time anymore.

I was never any good (no rising star label there!), rather pretty average (things haven't changed! ). I had the typical junior player approach: the opening game was fun and I studied it a lot; the middle game was ok, but the end game boring and for old people!

Maybe that feeling bred out of the many tries to check mate with king, knight and bishop against king in less than 50 moves in order to obtain the Gold Knight... To get the Bronze Knight, the Silver Knight and the Gold Knight there were 12 different tests/situations we had to master for each one of them.

My grandfather and (especially) his brother were good. They used to play each other without a board when they were working together (while sawing wood, for example). Once the brother won against Austrian GM Spielman (I think that's right?) when the champ gave a simultaneous performance. He gave me the protocol, I should still have it somewhere...

Carolus

Question:

Would you rather be the next Chess World Champion, or the designer of the next Deep Blue?

Of course, that I would rather be world champion myself. Not that is possible.
Maybe I could imagine to be a third rate couselor for a computer programmation team.

Suffering from ads?

Yeah, and if you lose and suffer from it, I'd rather kick out some silicium bugs and unplug some hardware, rather than punish myself
