I want a P4 the most, but the Athlon is definitely a good chip. It's just that the P4 is better.

Tired of ads?

Well I like both pc and macs. I use to have a mac, and had it for a long time. I never had any problems with it. Macs are ok if you dont play games that much and use it for word processing or going on the internet, but they tend to cost more than a pc. I read an article on gamespy, at least I think it was gamespy. Anyways it was talking about how apple use it ignore the gaming market, because the guy who started apple hated games, or something like that. Now they have changed theur view and are trying to get devolpers to make games for macs and they are trying to get their processors up to speed with the rest of them that are out there. I have a dell now and it is about a year old, when I got it was I could only get a 933 mghz processor, it was the fastest one the had at that time. I like it a lot too, and have not had any problems with it. One of the reasons I got a pc, instead of mac is that there is very little games for macs, while pc has tons and tons of games that you can buy.

Top that!

I'd say you wouldn't have a computer after you turned it on, because your black hole heatsink ate it all up.

It's merely a micro black-hole, so minute that the computer would have to be switched on continuously for 2500 years for it to swallow the computer up.

Nah, the grey bars mean overclocked on that chart.
2.53GHz is the latest P4 release.

They're going to hit 3GHz by the end of this year, and an Intel executive has gone on the record of saying they plan to hit 10GHz by the end of 2003 (using the new 0.09 micron process, rather than Intel's current 0.13 and AMD's current 0.18).

Suffering from ads?

I can't wait till I see the marks for Unreal Tournament 2003 on the iMac. When it's getting ~60fps on the highest end of PCs in 1024x768, I'm sure it'd be unplayable on an iMac.

Same with DOOM3.

Word is, Apple puts most of their R&D into short-term projects and other features that make Macs a "pleasure to use" , so the new Mac next year will be even farther behind.

Got spare money?

Monolith94:

I, too, have an (older) iMac that I purchased in May 1999. It's a 333mhz machine that fulfills my needs more than adequately (which might not be too demanding, since I don't have this compulsion to keep up with the Joneses nor do I play much 3D gaming).

I'll probably acquire an 800mhz iMac sometime before fall. And a printer, some software and (maybe) scanner ... so the whole package will probably total $2100 to $2200 (shipping and miscellaneous expenses will be extra).

Here's to hoping you never have a kernal panic.

I could have mailed you a 2.2G P4 Asher. According to your chart that's what you should have bought.

Of course, it would have cost more than your mother board and CPU combined.

Imran:

It's my understanding that Apple calculates their speed differently from PC companies. RISC vs. CISC or something like that. All I know is that an 800mhz machine would be more than sufficient to handle anything I could throw at it. Besides, isn't it common knowledge that you get what you paid for? I think a $600 PC machine (particularly a Gateway) might be a bit, eh, cheap on the inside.

They are very similar, GK... 800mhz isn't anything like a 1Ghtz P3... and since you said the 333 mhz was adequate, if you going to drop that much cash, get some quality!! Like a PC.

I mean, for that much money you can get a PC with 2.0 Ghtz chip!! About twice as fast.

Dollar for dollar, PC is more for less.

However, the deciding factor for anyone's purchase should be what they will be happy with. Prejudices are a large part of what make people happy.

Bah... here I'm stranded with an AMD k6-2 of 500 MHz without the money (or will?) to buy a new one... Heck, it's even so unreliable it can't do a kernel compile without crashing gcc... Maybe some of you would like to switch an "old" 1GHz CPU+mobo of any kind with this C64 of mine that already has antique value ...
