Big talk from both sides. Will one use nukes???? Who has the balls! Myself, I see both sides not willing to use a nuke no matter what. I think the world would not take well to something like that.

What I do not understand is what is India's objective? If they did defeat Pakistan and take over, they will set off a Muslim/terrorist resistance that will make the Middle East look pale by comparison. There only alternative is to give up their claim to Kashmir.
Again, what I think needs to be done is that the people Kashmir should vote on what they will like to do. India, Pakistan and China should all agree to abide by the outcome.

I agree that the "decisive battle" comment is scary. But I highly doubt either side will use nukes. That may be only because I find it hard to comprehend that anyone would be that stupid in this day and age, though.
Send in the UN, have a big vote with 3 choices: India, Pakistan, Independence. Not that either side would really want that, and not that I think the UN could really pull that off, but it's nice to think about.
As for US involvement, Dave, we're in quite a pickle. We owe Pakistan for the War on Terror, and have historically had poor relations with India. But as we all know, there are a lot of Islamic fundies in Pakistan who are willing to kill people to wrangle Kashmir away from India (or at least that's what they think they're doing). Musharraf says he's trying to crack down on the militancy, but India is claiming increased attacks which they blame on Pakistan. Tough one for us. Personally, I'd love to pass this one off on the UN.

so if i marry a jewish girl who is from, say, moldavia and i am greek the kids would be according to you jewish whereas they would in raelity be moldavian - greek
how's that for ethnicity? apparently jewish ethnicity is based not on blood/race (thank god) but on type of religion

Yeah, but it was one nationality circa 10-7th century BC. It also is not an active missionizing faith.
Islam and Christianity on the other hand, consider it their holy duty to expand their faiths to the entire world. Hence they are multi-national, and not in the least bit ethnic.
If Irish or French is ethnic, and they are conglomerations of Gauls, Romans, Norse, Germans, and others, then there is no reason to say that Jewish can't be ethnic just because there were other tribes included beyond the original twelve, assuming they ever existed.
In this case however, India is about as democratic as Israel. There is intense favoritism given to Hindus over Muslims and Christians especially, the Financial Times had a feature on it around a week and a half ago. India's fundamentalist government is bigoted just like Israel's, but they are both democratically bigoted.

India's natural state is to be partitioned. A unified subcontinent is much more the exception than the rule. Even being in only three parts (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh) is anomalous--it's usually been more like a dozen. There's a ton of distinct langauges, cultures and ethnic groups, with differences greater than those in the EU.
