i've read LOTR, all of it, but it is as BORING a book as i;ve ever read. |
The key is to skip over the poems, the songs, and to sneer at the elves. Poncy arrogant twits.
I recommend reading the LOTR just to get all the jokes in Bored of the Rings. I loved Tim Benzidrine. Guess who I hated the most in LOTR. Some of the jokes are a bit dated though.
The Hobbit was better. Less elf crap.

800 pages? Thats the LOTR not BOTR. BOTR has the advantage of being short. The start of Tai-Pan is about the same length as the whole of BOTR. I nearly gave up on Tai-Pan as it spent 150 pages on introductions. Then it got going. The only reason I go past the start is because a friend told that I had nearly reached the end of the intro at the point where I stalled out.

Thats still not Bored of the Rings. BOTR is 150 pages. Lord of the Rings has no jokes. Not a single one. Well I don't remember any. Unlike a lot of people around here I only read LOTR once. My copies were read at dozens of times till they fell apart by others.
Try Nine Princes in Amber. Now that is a heck of a fantasy series and the books are only 200 pages each. Totals out to 1000 pages but they all go fast. No poncy elves either. It does have a unicorn though. Can't tell you what makes the unicorn way different from any other in fantasy because its an essential plot point.

Oh, and the BBC radio version (which is otherwise excellent) has an hilarious piece of bad acting from the guy who plays Gandalf. When Treebeard tells him that he let Saruman go, Gandalf say 'Wha..?' like some cheesy B-movie actor.
Sam defeating the spider was more of a scene from the Hobbit than LotR.

Ned is such an idiot. Not only does he use a pic of Gandalf as an avatar icon despite beign a moron, he doesn't even know what he's on about with all that. Go sign the petition, Ned.

Noo, the whole theme of the scene seemed to me to be lifted from the Hobbit rather than fitting in with LotR.
