Hey, Danes of Apolyton! Could you enlighten me on the issue of Lars (von) Trier? I've heard it with or without the "von" from a lot of people and am pretty confused about the whole thing.

Hmm... another reason to check out Europa again.

His given name is Lars Trier, he added "Von" out of vanity, so I guess both could be correct if you stretch it a bit. Quite a bit, actually. I always refer to him as Lars Trier.

To answer kassiopeia from earlier on: Karen Blixen was an acclaimed writer, best known for "Out of Africa". She initially wrote under the name Isak Dinesen to conceil the fact that she was female.

Funny you should mention Morten Andersen. He was one of my sports heroes when I was in High School. He was a soccer player who walked on (tried out) for the Michigan State football team as a kicker. I had season tickets, and I always admired his style, very precise. He's still playing IIRC, though he is in his 40s now. He's one of the best kickers in the NFL in percentage and career stats.

FYI, the actor, Ove Sprogøe, although in his eighties by now is still alive and kicking.

I wonder how many of the older people here would recognize the character Mads Andersen Skjern from the TV series "Matador". We're always told it aired in 35 countries or so. Plus in Finland once the price went sufficiently down.

Funny you should mention Morten Andersen.

I got a birthday greeting from Andersen when I was a kid, along with some signed pictures and those football cards you can collect. He got some attention when his team somehow reached the SuperBowl, but even though he's certainly the country's richest sports star, he still isn't that well-known among the Danes.

Anders Lassen was the only foreigner to receive a Victoria Cross (posthumously) during World War II. He died in combat while leading his men in an attack on German positions in Italy.

Incredible as it may sound to you, I myself have only just barely heard of Lars Ulrich. I guess I'm not too much into that line of music. If you'd given me an hour to come up with choices for famous Danes, his wouldn't even have been on the list.
