I haven't done too much with OpenGL yet, but it's already very messy with having to use extensions for every board set (Nvidia, ATI, Matrox, S3) because the 1.3 standard is so obsolete.
I'd say if you're only doing the game for Windows, DirectX is a good deal better because it simplifies things greatly from a developer's point of view, and it's also nice to use DirectInput, DirectSound, etc.
If you're doing a multiplatform game, OpenGL is definitely the way to go.
There are some fundamental differences between the two. DirectX is more object oriented and OpenGL more procedural, and DirectX uses a left handed coordinate system (As the Z axis gets larger, that means it's farther away) while OpenGL uses a right handed coordinate system (Z axis gets larger as it gets closed to you).
Both have their uses and are both equally fun.
