I guess it becomes official when a quasi consensus is met : "oh yes, Notylopa jungle is a good name !" (like it happened during the chat). But Apolytonian plains sound a bit too easy IMO. Nontheless, I added them in the idea list.

Check out my June 9 post in UberKruX's "Our Empire's Name" thread. Maybe Hazie had the same idea earlier?

I didn't think the suggestion was that inspired when I made it. I just threw it out there. I'm surprised it has become so popular.



I was a strong supporter of a set procedure for naming cities, but I think geographical features are a differently colored horse. Informal discussion here and in the chats should provide enough ideas, and if it's absolutely necessary, a poll can be mounted. Consensus among the most active participants usually coalesces around a name, but polls give everyone a chance to feel a part of the game. Unfortunately, a poll for every geographical feature would definitely be overkill (although Markos would probably like the increased postings).

	Barbarian Tribe names Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

When playing with a custom civ, I often name cities by the name of the Barbarian Tribe that used to be setteled in that area. I think it would be a good idea for us Apolytonians to name land areas and cities by Barbarians tribes.

BTW, have we seen a single Barbarian yet?

Sorry if I didn't say it was your idea in the first place. But it confirms my point : Notylopa didn't come out from a hat, it was said and thought a long time before. I thought Hazie came out with the idea first (Uber used previously suggested ideas in his name poll). In all cases, we knew the name long before using it. Having ready to use ideas is the point of this thread.

I think we should name every region in the language of the country that (formerly) occupied it, unless they're, say, the Aztecs or Zulu or other countries for whom it would be kind of hard to translate.

You name landmarks because they're just that... something you recognize. Shouldn't everyone be able recognize their name also?

(Forgive me if everyone who's ever passed by Apolytonia is fluent in French, Latin, German, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Indian, and whatever languages the Aztecs, Iroquois and Zulus used)

Name it "rift" if you like, but the term refers to a valley-type feature, as the the Great Rift Valley in Africa, where two continental plates are separating, eventually to create a new body of water.

You're right about the basic meaning of rift, but it's more like what results from tearing something apart.

As for your English skills, they are as good as most native English speakers (although that may be faint praise!)
