(Note:Yes Judaism can be seen as an ethnic group, but only in part) |
The word comes from the name of a tribe, which is an ethnic group. Since only people from the tribe of Judah believed in this religion, the two concepts of Jewish ethnicity and Jewish religion merged into one : Jew.

I don't use the word ethnicity. Some people use it, but meaning of "nationality" is what Americans call "ethnicity". And place of residence is called "residence" not "nationality" .
However... I know what I am saying, and you're a bit wrong here. Jewish doesn't describe Judaism followers. In fact, a non-Jewish person can be a Judaism follower, though it's very rare. Ask any Rabbi. He'll tell you that Judaism is religion, while not every Jewish person follows it.
For instance, if your mother is Jewish, you're Jewish by the rules of Gallaha, there's nothing you can do about it. But at the same time, you can be following the catholic/buddhist/whatever else religion, but you'll still be Jewish.

But people who ARENT of the Ethnic group who are descendants of the tribe of Judah are also Jews....converts to Judaism, and Cohanim and Leviim(spelling? no clue how to spell them in anything but hebrew).

??? Eli, are you confusing Israel and Judah (in the Old Testament sense)? Israel (descendants of Jacob Israel) is a tribe which divided into twelve subtribes, descendants of the sons (and two grandsons) of Jacob. The tribe of Judah is one of the twelve. The religion we call Judaism is the tribal religion of all twelve of the (sub)tribes. To call the Judaism and all descendants of Jacob Jews is a bit incorrect, but common.
To confuse the thing, the twelve subtribes formed two separate states after Salomo, one called Judah (IIRC, the subtribes of Judah and Benjamin) and the rest called Israel (Which should be the name for the twelve of them.)
For the sake of this thread I think it's better to distinguish between the tribe and its religion
P. S. Eli, just for curiosity: Is there today still a strong tradition (in the ethnic group) to know to which subtribe a person belongs to, or did it get mixed up (or one simply doesn't bother?)

Ten tribes were exiled and assimilated, Sherlock. The vast majority of the "ethnic Jews" are from the Judah tribe. The rest are Leviim(Cohanim included). Edit : And Binyamin.

The Babylonian exile(with Judah) was a very limited one. Only 10,000 people were exiled to Babylon and they later returned.
The first exile, the Assyrian one, was more massive and the ten tribes that were exiled were scattered across the empire and were assimilated and never returned. Hence the ten lost tribes of Israel.

perhaps 'none' means "I couldn't care less" (ie. you have a care factor of 0 in regards to religion) while Atheist means your actively Atheist (ie. you specifically worship no god).
