FYI, "spare the rod and spoil the child" is referring to a Shepherd's rod...it's saying if you don't guide your child (note: GUIDE, not BEAT SENSELESS), you will end up with Mowgli.

I dunno...the Bible seems to think it's okay to kill a woman who goes to Church while having her period or someone who wears polyesther clothes, so why would beating a kid be so bad?

Speaking of which, I'm still owed that death sentence for shaving this morning...

"Curse" doesn't necessarily mean "wishing dead" anyhow.

Are you saying that "Jeez, this is boring, if only my parents weren't such dorks" is OK, but "Jeez, this is boring, I wish my parents would drop this religious crap" (meaning, to a fundie, that they'd fry in Hell) deserves death?

And no kid who has ever used the phrase "drop dead" deserves to live?

I think an excerpt from a letter from Gorky to Stalin should explain a little bit why atheists like to twist the scriptures to their own ends. I have never met one Christian who would do that to a child but I suppose it is important to the cause of atheism to paint all Christians with a broad brush. I could just as easily (and dishonestly) call all atheists minnions of Stalin or Mao Tse tung, but I won't stoop to their level of debate. Here is the excerpt:

It is furthermore imperative to put the propaganda of atheism on solid ground. You won't achieve much with the weapons of Marx and materialism, as we have seen. Materialism and religion are two different planes and they don't coincide.... For this reason, there should be courses set up at the Communist Academy which would not only treat the history of religion, and mainly the history of the Christian church, i.e., the study of church history as politics.

We need to know the "fathers of the church," the apologists of Christianity, especially indispensable to the study of the history of Catholicism, the most powerful and intellectual church organization whose political significance is quite clear. We need to know the history of church schisms, heresies, the Inquisition, the "religious" wars, etc. Every quotation by a believer is easily countered with dozens of theological quotations which contradict it.

We cannot do without an edition of the "Bible" with critical commentaries from the Tubingen school and books on criticism of biblical texts, which could bring a very useful "confusion into the minds" of believers.

--------------------------------------------

I think that all atheists worship Joseph Stalin.

Full PM-box? Change here!

Because it claims to be subject to a spiritual interpretation. It is like me quoting from a stock market ticker and trying to prove the theory of relativity. For example, Jesus told the children to come to him and he blessed them while rebuking his disciples for refusing them. How can anyone but a dishonest or ignorant person twist what Jesus actually did and said to mean that it is OK to beat a child like this. He drove out 'money changers' and religious hypocrites with a whip and there is no mention that he ever struck anyone. Of course these are all minor points to some I suppose.

No, the issue here is whether these guys were "true" Christians. I have no problem accepting Gorky and Stalin as "true" atheists (not typical atheists, but atheists nonetheless). But too many Christians use the "he ain't no Christian" argument.

It is entirely possible to be a "true" Christian and support the beating or execution of children. Indeed, the Bible commands it.

It may not be typical, but it is compatible with belief in Christianity.

I have never met a Christian who supports that. And a 'true' Christian does not kill his kids. I can call myself an orange blossom but that does not mean I will turn into an orange. It was Jesus himself that said his name would be misused by people claiming to be doing God a favor. It is just as fair for me to blame atheists for all the murders that people like Stalin committed as it is to accuse Christians of condoning this. I have studied the Bible for about 25 years and I never once felt justified by scripture to beat a kid like that. You mix the old testament with the new and forget that the Bible makes a division there. That is dishonest.

You're evading the question.

Should it be okay for a parent to kill his kid if the kids says to the parent, "I wish you were dead?"

Should it be okay to kill a woman for going to church while she is on her period?

Should it be okay to kill homosexuals?

Enlighten us...

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Well, I don't think anyone thinks those are okay . I think religions have been forced through a painful, but ultimately beneficial, evolution in two ways. 1 - from within in that the Bible has been reshaped by various religious thinkers through the ages who have questioned and reshaped biblical tenets in a more modern context. 2 from outside in that judeo-christian religions have been forced to reconcile their beliefs/tenets with the surrounding society at large. The exceptions, of course, are the fundy wackos and theocracys.

Just my .02

Have a nice day..

Many of the punishments and consequences, etc, some of you are referring to is the Law of Moses, which if I remember correctly ended with the first coming of Jesus.

And he's not God in the flesh, he's the Son of God. Different people, in my religion.

Many of you are misinterpreting the Bible, or picking the worst examples to use. What about the ones being meek, humble, love thy neighbor?

The Crusades, Inquisition, etc, happened after the Crucifixion, i.e. during the Dark Ages, or the Apostasy, where the true gospel and church of Christ had been taken off the face of the earth.

If this is just another attempt to demonize religion and Christianity in particular, you haven't succeeded IMO.

I'm not trying to demonize anything. The diplomat asserted the gentleman in the article weren't true Christians. I want to know why that is, and how the heck he is qualified to make such an assertion. I'm sure those men would likely think he or you isn't a true Christian either, so what's the definition, and who can determine it?

Boris... exactly... nice evasion, but the question needs to be answered.

quote:
So something is moral because lots of people do it! Wow, what incredible moral logical! I am speechless.

So you are saying that killing kids for cursing is moral?

And actually, YES, I am saying something is moral because lots of people do it. The whole basis for morality is what people think is right and wrong. If a lot of people are doing something openly that means they think it is right. Therefore society treats that action as moral. Morals are more a democracy than you think.

Suffering from ads?

I don't want to go too much into my own personal religious beliefs, unless someone wants to discuss it with me privately, so this may sound conceited, holier-than-thou, the only true church of Christ, that has all his gospel restored, is the LDS(Mormon) church. And in my church, we are firmly opposed to child/spouse abuse, neglect, rape, murder. If it had been a Mormon who had done such a thing, he would have been SEVERELY punished, like excommunicated(kicked out). We wouldn't tolerate it, like the Catholic priests are tolerated. Like I said, this sounds conceited when it hasn't been explained.

Have you ever seen K-PAX? You remember the part where they are talking about right and wrong, and Kevin Spacey says(paraphrased, not exact words), "Everyone being in the universe is born knowing right from wrong."

Many people who call themselves Christian or "true christians" do so only so they can hide behind it. THEY know whom they are serving - God or Satan, and I believe they will one day be judged because of what they did.

Morals are not a democracy, IMO: People may try to change things to fit in with a changing society that is leaning away from God, but my morals stay the same: man changes, God does not.
