I always wondered why Leisure Suit Larry was such a popular game.

Probably the same reason that Deer hunting games are popular- the world is full of dumb people (who are breeding like rabbits, no less).

Anyway, chalk me up for SMAC

LSL was popular when a lot of the current genres practically did not exist (FPS,RTS) and graphics were pretty crude. Given that adventure games were one of the most popular game types going and most blokes spend puberty onward trying to work out how to impress or seduce the opposite sex, why wouldn't games that make fun of someone trying to get laid be popular?

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Grumbold, my thought at the time was that there were lots of great arcade style games and the LSL thing was a mystery. Each to their own, I guess.

Tired of ads?

I don't remember PC arcade games of the quality you found in the arcades themselves, but that may just be my selective memory

WarcraftIII just recently set the record for fastest computer game ever to sell 1 million copies...... this could be a really big one in terms of sales.

Enter the AD-FREE zone

WarCraft III was not only the fastest to reach one million, it also had the largest release in the history of PC games with 4.4 million copies shipped. Of course, makes you wonder when they have only sold 1 million why they had to make so many right away.

Touche, Grumbold, I was wasting extreme amounts of money and time in Arcades at the time.

Oh, and also playing Atari and TRS 80.
Maybe the games didn't have to be that flashy to please me.

Full PM-box? Change here!

tniem: "Had to?" No, more like "was smart." The bigger your order, the less you're charged per item. Of course, if you order too big and half the copies remain unsold, that's bad too.

However, this is Blizzard. WC3 is an assured hit. Those 4.4 million copies will all sell, eventually, as the price drops and the game continues to be popular. Why not do all the printing at once and save some $$$?

For what it's worth, Square does the same thing- they're confident enough in their games that they almost always do one big printing, and then never print again (which can be annoying because some games which are expected to be lesser titles and rule sell completley out, while other games that really are lesser Square titles are still around). At least for their minor games, games like Final Fantasy they probably do 3-4 big printings.

Interesting thing to note is that warcraft 3 was available on the internet (via pirated copies) before it was for sale in the stores, I guess someone down the line somewhere got bored of waiting for them to print those 4.4 million copies.

Someone down the line ey

I think Champ Manager 4 will break that record when its released. Judging by the records it broke with the first CM3 over CM9798.

It's more or less the Settler-series. I've heard there were sold (or copied ) more times than any other game.

Er, The Sims is an awful, non-addictive Tamagochi-style breeding game with stupid hidden variables based on blah whereas Pokemon is a crude-but-fun demilinear RPG aimed at children. Where's the similarity?

Thank god for pirates though.
Its due to them that world-wide releases are common these days, instead of releasing in America first, then Europe a month later, then Australia a year after that.

Now we can all get it at the same time!
