I must admit that I never considered the part about Republic not allowing any military police... but still, I guess we can make up for it by alloting more money for entertainment, and besides we'll have wines if the French campaign is successful. Still, at the moment we'll be better off with monarchy...
IMHO Monarchy should be our choice of government, but once we secure more luxuries and maybe have a cathedral/colosseum or two we should switch to republic.

I agree with Shiber's first point. Republic's extra trade makes it worth our while even if we are unable to use police. I can't be sure, but I believe that the increase in trade, if it were all allocated to Entertainment, would more than make up for the loss of martial law. There should be some left over for science, and with that on top of losing the Despotism penalty we'll reach Literacy, and later Feudalism, Monotheism, Chivalry, Engineering, Invention, Gunpowder (or whatever tech train we choose) a lot quicker than otherwise.
It will take a while, but if Republic means that we get the strong weapons of the Medieval era a lot quicker (and an approximate 3:2 ratio is what I've experienced in my games), then it could very well be superior to Monarchy, from a strategic point of view. As Shiber said, we can always switch to Monarchy if necessary, or, if we haven't acquired that yet, even back to Despotism.
In a way, Republic is perfect for the jungle -- it doesn't matter whether a square was already producing trade or not; you get the extra gold all the same.
Just my two cents.

hi ,
nope , not playing ahead , "strategic planning" , testing , seeing if this or that theory is working , loads of people do it , ....!
and this should be done by more people to , it can only be more intresting , ...
not 40 turns ahead or so , just take the turn we are in now , see what happens if you break this or that , in that turn , then go back with autosave , play that turn with breaking something else , learning the species that invade our breathing space , ....
have a nice day
