Well I suppose I'll call this my final version of this scene. I could do lots more but I feel I need to move on.

modifications...

  • Bump mapped wall, floor and iron.
  • Added 13cm layered fog around floor
  • Animated the terrorist a little better
  • Added a chain to add a little bit of atmosphere
  • Created a picture outside of cell window
  • Resized various textures

Put an end to popups!

I fooled around with it again tonight and made a couple simplish scenes.

The first scene is a ball in a padded room. Don't ask me why. Just playing around.

I was just getting used to using volumetric fog and raytracing (both the walls and the ball are raytraced). Kinda hard to tell.

Full PM-box? Change here!

This scene is a mountain.
It's done with 3 actual layers, one with each texture.
All 3 layers are displacement mapped using fractals, so they have the same mountaneous form. I've randomize the transparancy with a gradient ramp for each layer so random parts are transparent, so it's possible to see parts of the layers below which results in the mixed-ground look (since all 3 textures are static materials). All three layers are bump-mapped with noise.

The clouds and sky are simply a texture with a box drawn on it.

I put in an omni light right behind the mountains to fake the real sun.

Put an end to popups!

And finally this one. It's a modification of the last picture, I replaced the brown texture with an ice one and made it reflective (raytraced).

I also chose a new sky background and moved the omni light to the side and made it brighter.

Gives the illusion of snow-capped peaks...

Yes and no.
The first one was just goofing off, the second one I had a read a tutorial about how to get "realistic" looking terrain, and it said to use 3 texture layers with a texture on each of them with random opacity maps to mix the textures.

From there I just played with it myself. That's how I learn things, but experimenting...I was never one for learning anything from following tutorials point by point.

Nice thread, nice pics Full PM-box? Change here!

Well I love creating 3d GFX. IMO, one of the best 3d software packages is Maxon Cinema 4D, however, it is very expensive.

The best for me is the object editor, it is quite easy to use. Also the raytracer is very fast, you can also render quick previews directly in the editor (or even just parts of the currently displayed scene). There are several versions available, from a quite cheap, but less powerful version for beginners to the real render monsters that also allow complex animations.

I used Truespace. It's editor is also easy to use, and the rendering is pretty quick. It's also cheap. Comparatively, of course

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

Well, I had luck, I bought the first version of C4D for the good old Amiga computer years ago, it was veeery cheap (ca. 190 DM, I guess that are 90 - 100 US Dollars). Later, Maxon made the more powerful PC and Mac versions, and offered cross updates for registered users relatively cheap, so I could spend some hundred DM for an update to the XL version (instead of several thousand, so much cost a complete new version)
