Im pondering whether it should be 1860-1873, or 1890-1914.

Former is politically more desirable, the great liberal empire, the Ringstrasse era. Latter is more culturally brilliant- Freud, shnitzler, Hoffmanstal, Klimt, Shoenberg, etc. Not to mention Herzl, whose bio im curently reading.

Of course by bringing back the empire, i mean not merely a restoration of its borders, but of the social and cultural conditions, including the large numbers of not quite fully assimilated Jews, who accounted for so much of the cultaral brilliance.

.....Mongals may have had the biggest empire ever, but I wouldnt exactly say they had the best, at least not from my POV.

The Soviet Union. You can bet that they would put a stop to illegal immigration from Eastern Europe into the EU!

Of course whether this would be worth living with the possibility of nuclear war again remains open to question.

I'm not too familiar with a Celtic Empire either. They colonized a lot of places, but they didn't have any centralized form of government to compare, say to the Roman Empire. They were more bound by custom and tradition.
