My guess is that you are playing a custom map. After patch 1.21f, huge map is reduced to 160x160. Too small, IMO.

You can easily edit it back up to 256x256.

Also, the 512 city limit is trully sucky.

Especially when you've just gone through a great deal of trouble to bridge the two halves of your empire, and, with just ten squares to go, you...can't.

I played with this last night in the editor. In there you can change the sizes of the maps that are generated.

I see what people mean about tedium on a map that size.

Then a thought occurred... it could be quite a challenge to win a game on a 256x256 map by Domination only. Isn't the domination victory condition 60% of land area? If you used the minimum ocean area in your map generation then this would could take you quite a while.

With a P4 - 2+GHz 512M RAM system, how long is the average late game turn on a huge map?

Tired of ads?

In my current game, the 160 x 160 map doesn't make turns too slow. The AI (7 civs) takes about 60 seconds to do its thing in the early modern era, and this is with a 1 GHz Athlon and 512 MB PC 133. What does take forever on bigger maps is warmongering. Moving around several hundred MAs, MIs, and artilleries and using bombers and ships effectively, even with the shortcuts, can make peace a real convenience.

Full PM-box? Change here!

I absolutely agree with Thrawn's statement a few posts up. I have a 733MHz processor (to Thrawn's 550MHz) and I too do not have problems with modded megamaps (256x256). I only play on those size maps! Sure, it takes a minute or five (Ten to fifteen? Never seen it happen on my computer...yet... ) for the AI turns to be calculated, but I tolerate it (against all logic and reason). People really don't need the 2GHz processors because there are very few software programs out there that can utilize their full speeds, and Civilization III ain't one of them...

Tired of ads?

I like rather large maps, but of course it slows things down a bit, but I love playing with all 16 civs, so I have adjusted all mapsizes to hold 16 civs.

That gives much more room for diplomacy and variation. A game with 8 or fewer is not interesting. In civ 1/2 or Moo 1/2 I allways missed more opponents. In BOTF there was these minor races to make up a little for there being only 5 real opponents.

Oh, and of course on the smaller maps with 16 civs, some of the civs will almost allways be exterminated rather quickly, as each civ dosn't have as much "fat to withstand hard times". But mostly I end the game between 1500 and 2000 and still have 10 to 14 opponents around at that time even on a tiny map. I mostly play on levels 2, 3 or 4.

The waiting between turns. It isn't a complete showstopper but I would like things to move faster. In late game I can have AI-gameturns of 5 min. or more (yes, its nice to have a good book) on a huge map. And all the pop-graphics are turned off.

Suffering from ads?

To those of you without to long AI-turns:
Are you running WinXP/Win2k?

I think WinXP is better at using memory than Win98 (which I am using). I have 768 MB ram so that should be ok, but if Win98 realy only uses 128 MB it dosn't matter.

My machine is a 500 Mhz AMD K6-2 with lots of HD and 32 MB videocard. Im using DirectX 8.1 (after advice from Panag: Thank you, it seems to have helped out some of the way with the speed).

Increase the size of your Attachments

Up until a recent upgrade (to play Morrowind ), I used to play 180x180 with 8 civs on a p2-400 + 256 ram. Turns were slow in modern era (around 5 mins), but I just can't stand small maps.

Oh, a tip for 'dealing' with the 512 city limit. Arrang settlers where you want to put your new cities. Then, turn into a bloodthirsty maniac and decare war on whoever has been annoying you, then raze half their cities. Do much the same to anyone foolish enough to join their side. They quickly beg for peace and the AI becomes very reluctant to ever annoy you again.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Upgrading RAM is definitely the way to go to get Civ3 running faster. Processor, video cards, etc. do not have as much of an impact.

Denmark is a small country (around 45000 km2) and in civ3 it was always just one tile .

In civ3 with a 256x256 map there is 6 tiles to toy with. Not a hole lot (I did say it was a small country ), but its enough to be the beginning of a great empire!

We shall be victorious! We will take it all! You better look out for the danish killer rabbits!?!

What I am really saying is that a 256x256 map allows for rather acurate maps. If you'r doing D-day in a fullscale WWII its nice if you can actually see the coastline of Normandy.

Now, I only wish I had that 11,5 GHz P8 with 8Gb ram....

hi ,

huh , thanks

if you want more and really great stuff to make it speed up , just ask

the best is to play with mac , with mac os X it really goes fast

win 98SE aint bad neither , the rest is a bid slow

some depends also on the speed of your harddrive , 12000+ RPM's rocks

hi ,

say , if you want to buy a new one , get a mac , its really user friendly (!) and man , just so fast , ....

what is really intresting is that civ goes faster on a mac with win98 , and that is a proof that a large part of the speed has to do with the hardware

what we really would need are bigger maps , its unfair that a country like Denmark is one tile , or France 5 , ....

they should put it in , and for those who dont like it , well then they should not play on it , voila , everyone is happy
