i was born and raised in the us.
however, every year since i was 6 i'd been to korea for the summer, a good 3-4 months; i've gone during winter break sometimes, too. the last time i went, however, was almost a year and half ago. i'm 19.5 now, so~

i'd say i have at least 6-7 years of experience living there, and fairly knowledgable of what i'm talking about.

that, and my mom, born and raised there, and my dad, born and raised there, haven't had it... and none of my relatives, extended family, their friends... who were born and raised and still live there...

so you see, this myth about eating dogs and exaggerated percentages for those that eat them regularly are quite false.

quote:
Q: Your making it sound like im bashing all Koreans for being terrible dog eaters, im not...i've never said that, but those that do are barbarians(as are anyone who eats cows).

by your standards. who are you to judge? you don't have any basis for application of your morality, your ideals, over another culture which didn't even have a parallel development with your own.
eating dogs is no more barbaric than eating cows. and eating cows isn't barbaric at all from a certain point of view.

I don't see any problems in eating dog. The only objection could be cruel treatment, I guess... But that's no different here.

And how about horses? In continental Europe, there's nothing special about that. I've eaten plenty of it, and it's not even a special delicacy or anything...

Not to mention deer, lamb, hare, rabbit, duck, bison, or even ostrich, kangaroo, crocodile and zebra. Those are the more exotic delicacies freely available in the west.

Hey, look! Uber-commies and Uber-Capitalists can agree of some culinary aspects of culture, now that we have a common enemy, the vegans, when there is a good buffet of food and drink, the political conversation tends to dry up in favor of more sensual and entertaining subjects. Damn, I think I will get a recipie for dog: There a about Asian food markets near my house, and three dozen such restaurants. Dog is also a special party dish in Vietnam, the Phillipines, and elsewhere is Asia, is it not?

Around here, even in the middle of Korean food district of san Antonio (North of Fort Sam Houston) I had heard of dog recipies in connection first with the Phillipines (a whole roast, stuffed with rice and other food), and secondly with Vietnamese, years before in connection with Korean food, and it all cases it was a party food, such as for a wedding, with a specially raised food animal. Nor does there seem to be any significance non aceptence in my area, it is just another one of the bit of foreign culture that the military (which is very highly repected in this town) brought from over seas.

"but nobody talks about the chinese, the viet, the laotians, etc. eating dogs."

I think this is connected with Korea entering the developed world. Those other countries are given a pass for being backward hicks.

perhaps. but it's a bit annoying. lefty, che, you guys must be lucky. i've run across several people asking me how dogs taste, which is, to say the least, tiring, annoying, and ultimately just irritating.

as for korea entering the developed world... maybe that's part of the reason? but i doubt it... no liberals as of yet seem to protest too vehemently against brain-eating europeans and what not...

I noticed that Euros, who consider themselves as the most civilized people in the world, have the strongest dose of "holier-than-attidute" and the most trouble with dog-eatings.

yeah. i suppose i come across as probably a lot more pissed than i really am~ i am irritated about it, true, but it's something i can usually deal with.

but it's also something i wish i didn't have to deal with at the same time; it's an old custom, and a lot of old customs you kinda just want to stick in a closet and forget about, no?

seriously though, Q Cubed, if people ask you that they may be asking simply because they HAVE been taught wrong by jokes and steriotypes. If you're nice, and simply explain to them what you've explained in this thread, they will be wiser and be able to spot the phonyness of the accusation in the future, and may even stick up for Koreans when they hear the joke used...

Better that than simply getting upset or yelling at them...

They can eat whatever they want, just as everyone else eats whatever they want.

Some people eat ants, other eat cow, others dogs, etc. No difference, they are all animals, sheesh. They eat each other all the time, it's natural (unless they eat plants, plankton, etc. obviously).

I wouldn't eat dogs, but I wouldn't care at all if someone else does.

Irish wolfhounds are very large dogs, taller than great danes. When she has them out in public, people always makes jokes about hiding her "horses." It's just something annoying that people with no sense are always gonna ask.
