Gnawing on your mind...

My two cents,
The roleplaying aspect of the game is probably the best way to keep the game interesting. What it does is forces a player to invest a little more into the game. And it helps to have to have a sense of humor about it.
From what I have seen in the games that I have started, the non-role players are most often, the ones to drop out first. (That's not always the case though, but if somebody drops out, he usually was not a regular poster on my game threads)
I do have to say that I have seen many players who have expressed a lot of interest in playing, but later bailed out. I do have to agree with Jon that the best way to get a group of players you can count on is by invite only.
All you can do to prove you will be different is to keep playing when you get into a game - build you rep that way. This community is small enough where one can quickly figure out who is consistent.
What bothers me is the lack of communication when there are delays, or the unwillingness of a player to 'fess up and say that he no longer wants to play. Personally, if somebody wants to drop out, thats fine with me, but drop out with integrity please.
Yeah, it is an investment of time, that much is for sure...

Birdman,
Drop in on any PBEM thread and say what you want. Its not private, and it's actually an encouragement to those in the game. All of us want our threads to be read by a wider circle, than just the players in that particular game.

... and another misunderstanding ;-)
I didn't get upset from your words, Birdman. I simply didn't understood what you ment by "turning yellow". I was sitting in my chair, my forehead frowning and brood over your words. What did he mean? Is this some slang, I don't know?
As you all will have recognized already, english isn't my native language, and due to the lack of training, my english is like a plant in the shadow ... a little bit atrophied. I tried to think around the corners and didn't see the simple meaning of your words ... ;-)
And if it would be for the reason for a war, we can have it much easier. I think, that I can also force the japanese to sacrifice some virgins ... ;-)

I have rarely seen any deliberate insults on this BB. I do, however, also play SMAC PBEM and there I have read some really very nasty postings. The only thing to do when Games turn personal is to 'get out quick'! I made the mistake of allowing myself to get angry, on a personal level, once and it did me no credit at all. I am ashamed of myself for it as I should have either accepted the situation or just walked away. It is a mistake I will never make again!
In terms of being 'accidentally' insulting, it is important to make the distinction between what your Game Persona can say from what you can, or would, say. 'St Jon' has the right to be as derogatory as he likes about Mobius, Demos, Hex, etc and their Civ's whilst 'Jon' would never suggest that Gwilym, Jono or Dave had unnatural relationships with grazing animals or that their people were nothing better than a bunch of 'stone age savages'. It is different and should be accepted as such.

Yes, Jon, you made the point at 100 Percent!
We always have to seperate between the game and the real life. Insulting an other civilisation leader never have to mean, that you insult the person who plays the leader!
If we will ever kepp that in mind, we will have much fun playing TOGETHER! Always remember, we play this game together!

OK... I've held off long enough... time for my two shequels..
I've often pondered on the nature of the other PBEM players in some of the games we play. It is an interesting medium, in that the person on the other side of the mouse can be anywhere from 9-90. From all cultures and backgrounds. Not coincidentally, many players take their own (or preferred) RL nation, as the nation that they play. This can be the greatest cause of (personal) conflict if people take advantage of it, which most thankfully dont.
Our participation in the game is a prelude to conflict. The roll playing gives us the excuse we need to start a war, and we have to face it, that is what CTP is about. We don't need an excuse to attack, but it makes it more fun. Take any excuse, play it up, and start a war. Check your history books, this was done so often that its (really!) not funny. I hope that I've never offended anyone personally in the games, but I believe that most people take our "diplomacy" for exactly what it is. A game.

LOL! (falling off chair, laughing hysterically, rolling across floor, etc)
Victim?!! VICTIM?!!! I have never attacked you, and you know that. As for your 33, that's - THIRTY-THREE( ), units crossing my border at last count, what are they? Aid workers?? Hmmm? Methinks not. As for "never" initiating a hostile act, (ahem) what about my peace keepers? If you don't consider that act hostile, then i can only suppose that you got that little statement in before you launch all-out war on me.
That little military readiness betrayal will not be forgotten! All i can say is, don't take the powergraph to be gospel, m'boy!
