If you complete three years you have the B.Sc qualification. The extra year is a conversion to a M.Sci.

If you fail the conversion you get the degree that you earnt.

You can choose just to do a B.Sc to start with.

Why?

A post-grad degree is different to a Masters degree.

List of courses, 4 year M, 3 year B at Imperial College

I think terminology is just different, giving rise to the confusion.

So it looks like they're not quite the same thing, then.

The graduate degree is the Masters here, anything after that is a Doctorate.

Undergrad degrees (4 years) are the most common by far.

No, because you can't end a sentence with a preposition, and isn't "with" a preposition?

I would say "With what degree did you graduate?"

Physics B.Sc, first class.

Additonally I get to put the letter ARCS after my name, but they are just for making me look important and have no real value.

Hopefully I will get even more letters after my name by the end of next year when I finish my current qualifications.

Check to see if there's a civic band/orchestra in the area. A friend of mine plays piano, but the university's orchestra didn't need a second piano player. Turns out there was a civic orchestra that needed a piano player and snatched her right up.

To all: For comparability sake, it would be nice if you state the country you are studying in when you talk about degrees like BSc.

Start singing Most choirs welcome good singers (ok, that's easy for me, I'm tenor).
And if it helps you to feel well against the horn majors:
A friend of mine had an audition with a horn professor. He played, and the professor looked at his school certificates. Then the professor asked: "I could take you, you play well enough. But you've got quite good marks in most of the subjects. Why the heck do you want to learn horn?" My friend was well amazed, studied physics, and later was happy about this advice.

Really? We had a glut of tenors, and hardly any basses. I guess I'd assumed that most choirs had the same issue.

In most choirs I've been into, there were more basses. Maybe you've sung in a very young choir, where the males didn't yet fully develop their bass voice (which comes at an age of 25-30). Conductors who don't know the voice too well put them into tenor (unfortunately me, too). After what I do know now, a young male should first sing bass and skip over the notes which are too deep for him, and go up after two or three years if he is really a tenor.
But apart of that, most are simply lazy, and bass is easier to sing. Real basses an real tenors are likewise rare.

Ha. Just sing a low D for thirty seconds and tell me how easy it was for you. (That's the horror I had to put up with every day thanks to Mr. Rachmaninov...)

loinburger, still, you get the D or you don't. (I don't except I've had 4 litres of beer and three hours of sleep afterwards). Lacking either voice or technique, singing constantly above c' is a real pain, and this is what tenor quite often does. And holding an e' for 30 seconds as written by Stravinsky is also a hard for those with a better technique. Esp. if the conductor repeats this five times.

We should start a new thread if you want to continue this topic

Usually that's not quite true, in the sense that the voice is horrible misformed, and a good teacher even can do a lot about the latter. I meant singing for release (that's what I'm doing) and not as a profession.
