Legalise the lot, why should it be the government's business what people do with their bodies.

I agree with you C0ckney in that principle, but I think government has a responsibility to take action in certain situations. If every illegal drug was legal, well, let's just say just ecstasy, for instance. If ecstasy was legal, I know for sure usage would go up in clubs. The thing with prohibition is that it only works to an extent if it actually keeps the supply of drugs well below the demand. In this regard, prohibition failed with alcohol and is failing with marijuana, heroin, and crack/cocaine. But with ecstasy, many club-goers don't have access to this drug. With legalization I think that more kids/young adults would experiment with ecstasy. I've known many people who have taken ecstasy, regularly used it, and even a young girl that died from it.
Sure, the government has no right to tell informed, educated people what they can or can't do with their bodies. But too many young people are ignorant about too many drugs. I was a member of that small group of scared teens that realized their ignorance when it came to drugs. I learned more about drug use before the first time I decided to try marijuana. I went through a period of regular use, even a short period of over-use and abuse. Before legalization of harder, pharmaceutical type drugs, I think that people need to be educated about all of the drugs and their consequences.

Sava, there will always be stupid people who stupid things, look at the Darwin awards for example, it isn't up to the government to protect people from their own stupidity. I think more education is a great idea btw.
Ecstasy is interesting, I would say that most people who die from that die from either de-hydration or from taking stuff which is very impure or simply isn't ecstasy. More education and the quality controls that legalisation would bring would cut ecstasy deaths to almost nil.
Paiktis, If people commit crimes while on drugs or drive whilst under the influence then they should be punished for that, rather than punishing them for just using drugs..

No, seriously. Food can be more or less bad for you. The healthier (i.e least bad) alternative should be preferred and encouraged by the state.

Okay, the title says King, but how long have you been in the Off Topic forum? I'm surprised that anyone could be surprised by this
--"At the minimum, all natural drugs should be legal."
Define "natural" please.
--"But too many young people are ignorant about too many drugs."
You can drop the "about too many drugs" from this statement and still be perfectly correct. Guess who's doing the teaching?
--"if with one pill you can take your car and smash some inocent inconspicious pedestrian walking by then..."
Driving under the influence (of almost anything on the list) is already illegal, and doesn't stop it from happening. This is a crime to be punished, just like other crimes.
Unless you want to start locking people up because they might do something, or banning everything down to knives and pencils because they might be used to hurt someone.

This is a reply more to the one you're repling to than to you, but I can't let this line pass up unused...

That's not the word I'd use for it. Dictator, perhaps. Idiot would fit. Overbearing yahoo. Sanctimonious jerk. I'm sure you get the idea.
I just have this problem with people who are so convinced that they know what's best for everyone else, and have the attitude that by damn everyone is going to like it or else.

Outlaw them all except for caffeine, chaw, snuff, and toad licking. These 4 only harm the user. Tobacco harms others through passive inhalation, the others impair cognitive abilities, reflexes, perseption and judgement, there by making the user dangerous to others around him.

You can argue that taking the drug itself is a punishable offence since you knew that after you have taken it you'd be... out of character, shall we say?
The same goes for alcohol too but at least on that regard it is something that has been around in society for a long time and its effects have been already assessed (drinking in succession is needed to reach **** face drunkeness contrary with a pill where you get the effect immidiatly etc) and tolerated.
I have not a unmovable position on the subject of which drugs should be legalized and who should not. I just would prefer that they are not legalized and at the same time the drug users not getting in trouble for using them, additional trouble that is. Except of course if they have done something other which is criminal.

quote: We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of uppers, downers, laughers, screamers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon. |
Probably one of the best movies ever made...
