It's the middle of summer. A lot of workplaces shut down from the Friday before Christmas until the first Monday after New Year anyway, but a lot of people take their annual holiday time - maybe 3 weeks - as well, so they don't go back to work till well into January. It's also, as Horse indicated, an Australian tradition to bludge in January. Even if you're back at work. I, OTOH, am the exception.  OTOOH, I'm a freelancer, working from home, so I can holiday during the day - any day - and work at night if I choose.
