The new box is better then the old box because it at least has a few interesting tidbits in the background. The old box was just so bland; a monochrome map of east Asia. What was exciting about that?

"Well, guess we'd better shut down the nuclear reactor and scuttle the sub, boys. I'll go down with the ship; you report our failure to sink an 18th century sailing vessel back to the Admiral."

"Aye, aye, Cap'n!"

Seeing the new art and knowing that "Unreal Tournament" also is going to be published at about the same time, I had a great idea - why not go hand in hand to build a multiplayer "Tournament" brand that can be easily recognized
across the Infogrames line of great multiplayer titles? The titles even could benefit from the great reputation of each other!

Attached you find a quick design suggestion ;-)

box art looks kinda aoe though, don't ya think? i think the first one suited civ's subtle class more, like the civ 3 box.

That is one ugly box. Now I'll have to mail order it so as not to be seen carrying it around.

I thought the original was a bit more sleek and sophisticated. The new one looks like a too cartoony. So call me a box snob.

Well... the box art for Civ3 looks also too much cartoony. Don't get me wrong, I like cartoons, but they just don't fit into a Civ game

Funny, I rarely throw my game boxes away... I had the Civ2 box until recently, but then I needed some space on the shelves and I had to throw it away. Maybe I'm a little freak.

nope, game boxes are cool, 10's of years from now you will see a game box you played when you were 10, 20, whatever, and it'll bring back great memories.

I have collected jpg's of all the old games I used to play and burned them to cd. I have a bout 30 of them, but i'd love to get the rest.

And that's another thing that is great about games that get old, they get harder and harder to find, which makes their value for it go higher.

Boxes should never die, or games become what the music industry is today - constant brainwashing crap

- which is another reason I like the more interesting boxes more than the sophisticated ones - it's something to look at, like a where's wally book. Where as bland ones are only good for a few seconds.

Well it's a typical Civ-box (showing different stages of history). I like the covers of the whole series. This way you see the development of mankind in one picture. It's impressive. Perhaps I will buy the ad-on just for the cover . Civ III alone against the AI provides only medium fun hopefully it would be better in endless multiplayer duels to see who is the best Civer in the world.

I agree with you, but I must admit that all the Civ III game concept is steering away from a group of player who loved a Civ1/2 style, to a group of people who feel more actracted from a different game style, more like Age of Kings

I kind of thought it was an attempt at appealing to a "different" audience, but couldn't think of a way of expressing the thought that wouldn't insult someone.

Nope, I'd say you're normal. (At least from my perspective). I've still got game boxes from the 1980's (Even a few of the old Commodore-64 flat boxes from EA - e.g. Bard's Tale, Archon, etc.)

Yes, it's a typical 'show the evolution of civilization' boxart, and I like it better than the old version. The little globe-looking thingy for the 'O' in "World" looked odd to me, and I'm glad they changed it. That and the old box was just too bland, not enough appeal, just a purple globe and the title.

Surely I hope my post was not offensive to anyone! It simply was the same note most people here used to write, to explain the gameplay and rules difference between Civ II / SMAC and Civ III.

Age of King is not my cup of tea, but I don't think that people that play it are wrong! Some friends of mine used to play it and one is also a better Civ II player than me
