1100 T F T Y : (BMC)1100 Turns Forty This Year
The 1100 was a very successful British automobile design. It was one of the first to uses front-wheel drive to increase the passenger/cargo space of compact cars. Also it had a unique Hyrolastic Suspension, which was an all fluid system that produced a smoother ride than was available from conventional shock absorbers on a compact car. Introduced in Great Britain in 1962, the auto was also later produced in Italy, Spain, South Africa, and Austrialia. There was also an export model for the US that was marketed as an alternative to the VW Beetle. It was discontinued in 1974 with over 3 million produced.
