"Selt" instead of "Celt"

The Brittish pronunciation of "schedule" is irritating, even if they're right. I have no idea how we managed to put a "k" into that word, but it just sounds better to us.

Most French words commonly used in English.

Aluminium is just funny (again, one must concede the Brits say it "right"). But not annoying.

There are more, I'm sure, but I can't think of them right now.

I think it is funny how half the country (US) calls it "soda" and the other half call it "pop", no one really says "soda pop".

I can honestly say I never knew the U.K.'s English was so ****ed up. For a country that originated the language you guys have about 40 different ways to say it.

I think the rest of the world should thank us for bringing (generally) normal AMerican English to the world. Hooray for American hegemony!

'Wuss-tuh-sher' should just about do it.

I like the way Americans in the Deep South pronounce words of one syllable as if they're a lot longer. Makes me feel warm and sleepy.

I like the way Canadians say 'out and about in a boat' as if the diphthongs all had the same sound. There are plenty of rural Australian towns with Koori names, and if you didn't know how to pronounce them you'd just give up. And even the ones with British originals are sometimes different- like Launceston in Tasmania. The Apple Islers pronounce it as 'lawn-cess-tun', whereas in Cornwall it's pronounced 'lawnstun'. Aussie comedians refer to it as 'Inceston' and make jokes about how travel agents never offer family discounts in Tassie because too many people would be eligible at one time....

Anyway, it's hardly a deliberate policy by the English to make the language as irregular as possible- you have words of Latin origin given an Anglo-Saxon/Old English equivalent, then a Norman French gloss over that. And that's without the Old Norse elements in Geordie land- people have 'bairns' instead of children and women are 'wifes'. Apparently the television programme 'When the Boat Comes In' was intelligible to people living in Scandinavia- odd, given other Brits needed subtitles for it...
