Interesting. The story I heard said there were only four, and Luxemburg was among them. Could you PM me the list and a link? When the last one is guessed we can then post both lists in the interest of full disclosure.

As much as some of you would like to disagree, I think the American government reflects the will of the people. And here's why:

Republicans are pushing their "fear the terrorists; let's kill them" agenda to the forefront while our domestic problems remain without attention. I'd say the majority of Americans are so brainwashed by the news media, that they think the greatest threat to America is foreign terrorism.

Come on folks... 9-11, death count around 3,000...
death count from gun violence 10,000+
death count from tobacco 100,000+
death count from traffic accidents involving alcohol 10,000+

Yet all I see on TV is anti-marijuana commercials saying how smoking pot funds terror. And on the 4 major news sources (Fox, NBC, CBS, ABC) all I see is Osama bin Laden, and terrorism (CNN, BTW is under the umbrella of ABC).

America's leadership, like its people, has its priorities seriously f*cked up.

Israel.... ok this survey was a bunch of B.S.

But then again, a question posed as such could only have political motives.

The results as reported this past week by National Public Radio were as follows:

1. Dominican Republic
2. Israel
3. Luxemburg
4. Malaysia

Sagacious Dolphin sent me a PM with a link to another survey.

http://www.gallup-international.com/survey5.htm

This is the Gallup Millenium Survey, which I presume was conducted in 2000. (or 2001 for you pendants out there) The results of a similar question in the Gallup Millenium Survey of more than 50 countries were as follows:

quote:
Comparing the responses at the national level, more Malaysian citizens - over three-quarters (77%) rate themselves as living in a country governed by the will of the people, than any other. Other countries where majorities agree that they are governed by the will of the people are Nigeria, Thailand, Taiwan, Philippines and Norway – the only Western country where this is so.

OK... now we need the statistics on the following to find what is the best: Government Type, Religion, some score for personal freedom/freedom of speech, levels of income etc... to find out what is really important.

I am suprised Iraq is not on the list ... they just gave Saddam 100% approval rating

1. Dominican Republic
2. Israel
3. Luxemburg
4. Malaysia

Here's a link to a fuller view of the report.

Report

Interesting to me is that North America (population weighted) stands at 43%, while the EU is at 33%. I guess this means that the US is close to being on the list of 50%+ countries...

Another thing that should be noted is that the Middle East is dead last on the list at only 12% believing their government does the will of the people.

Insert democracy here.

Dammit. I didn't expect the monarchies to rate very high, but I figured that the theocracies might be pretty high up there...

"I didn't expect the monarchies to rate very high, but I figured that the theocracies might be pretty high up there..."

What I want to know is whether (a) the governments in the region have these low of approval ratings because of US interference or (b) the US has such low approval ratings in the area because of its persistent association with these unpopular governments...

I don't know, but I'll guess (b) just for fun.

The US is surprisingly popular in Iran. Go figure. This one's funny...

"The head of the National Institute of Public Opinion, Behrouz Geranpayeh, was sent to prison on 16 October immediately after being interrogated by a Teheran court which accused him of spreading lies and fabricating official names, according to his lawyer. The government-run Institute was shut down earlier this month after publication of its poll showing 74.7% of Iranians wanted a resumption of relations with the United States. The head of the official news agency IRNA, which published the poll results, was also summoned by the country's conservative-dominated judiciary."

and from the same poll...

"According to IRNA, the poll found that 45.8 percent of respondents believed US policies on Iran were "to some extent correct"."
