MarkG we would like for you to further proceed in this matter. I have think that what Shrape suggested is a good way to go about it, but I know that it is up to you and the other team leader that is involved in this.
To others in team. For now please keep this quite. I am not so sure weather or not to say anything at this time, but as was shown that the cheater learned nothing, and just fooled vondrack. Making it public might not be nessecary.

MarkG has acted on this matter by contacting NYE of GS. Of course he is no longer playing right now, but he says that they found out about this and said one of their own team members was simply trying to test out the security of the chat of both our team and anther one. I will soon post the email reply from NYE as soon as I can.

Agreed, I should have informed you. I thought that at the time, but forgot about it in the flury of events. For that you have my apologies, personally.
Please feel free to post that first message, and this email on your forum.

Well i will have to talk to our team about it. Just so you know we have taken steps to secure our communications on IRC so that this does not happen again. I dont see why you did not inform the other teams after your test so we would all know. I would also like to post your email in our team forum for all to see.

Hello Mark and Jack.
I am taking a break from the game right now, but this is serious enough for me to pay attention.
I am aware that Shiber did some probing of team security shortly after he joined. He reported to us that he could infiltrate some other teams on IRC. He also went to some trouble to set things up so that we could not easily be infiltrated.
When he reported to us, we discussed it briefly and decided that such eavesdropping would be against the pledge put forth by Togas that I signed on to with my team's approval.
As far as I know, his experiments were based on hiding presence, and not impersonation (going from memory). I'm not exactly sure what he did, because I do not know a lot about IRC.
At any rate, we asked Shiber not to try to infiltrate IRC anymore. As far as I know, he has honoured that request.
Is that satisfactory for Jack and legoland, as well as for you, Mark?

Greetings to both.
First my apologies to Jack as i'm late in moving forward with this issue.
NYE, i'm sad to inform you of an unfortunate incident.
On December 6 a member of the Legoland team reported that someone had
impersonated on irc another member of the team and got access to the
private irc channel. There wasnt a serious leak of information as the game
was at the begining but the issue still stands.
From the logs of the irc server, i believe the responsible person was
Shiber

from nimitz!Shiber@bzq-198-138.red.bezeqint.net
As you can see, he also tried to get into the VoxControlli channel, but
i'm not contacting them yet as i havent had a complaint about it.
Also, there hasnt been any similar incident logged after that.
The Legoland team would prefer if this issue was dealt with internally at
Gathering Storm, without making a fuss in public.
I hope you agree with this

Yeah, that explination does sound a little weak. It's not like they publicly announced they were doing a security test. I guess it was just for everyone's benefit though. But, hmm, they seem to have forgotten to have told us the results...And, oh, so they got some private team information in the process, I guess that was just an added bonus.
Dang, sarcasm is always hard to manage in text... |
Well thankfully the spy did not learn any information that we know of.

Hmm, as much I want to put this aside as well, I feel that nye's description of "testing the security" is lame at best.
Shiber deliberately impersonated Nimitz and now we know that he also attempted to infiltrate Vox Controli as well.
We also know that while he didn't participate in the discussion he did stay in the chat room for a while. If he was "testing the security", why didn't he leave immediately?
Furthermore, if nye has known about it for a while, why didn't he privately bring it up with Jack saying that it was not sanctioned by Gathering Storm and wouldn't continue until now - after he was confronted by Mark (upon our request) about it.
I find the whole matter suspicious at best. Perhaps it isn't the policy of Gathering Storm to do this, but especially with nye's break from the game, who is to say that Shiber won't try something else, especially if he is in a leadership position with Gathering Storm...
I mean with all the veteran players in that team, they don't need to cheat. Sounds like eyes of night in civ2, the guy is a great civ2 MP player, but has been caught cheating at least twice - the question is why?
But if everyone else wants to put it behind us, that's ok. But I would be still a bit wary of Shiber and perhaps Gathering Storm. Frankly I would query Nimitz to see if he wants to go further with this as he is the one who was impersonated.

I agree as well. This little test does not sound very good to me etheir. If something like this happened why not tell everyone so they too can secure their communications too?

I'm concerned that some people who know now where you store your pictures, could actually take a look at them. |
Dunno why there is no response by me... I distincly remember putting one together... maybe one of those darn connection problems...
Nevermind:
ISDG pictures are stored at the Poly server, while Lego pictures are partially on www.jimaz.cz, partially on redstar's machine. I plan to move all of them to redstar's machine once I find some spare time (I have run out of space on our corporate server - it's just a rented space of about 30 MB, I think...)
Also, speaking of the spying incident - after my little note in one of the ISDG security threads I knew only Shiber would understand, he PMed me, explaining he was a security freak, always trying to check how easy or difficult it is to break security measures of others... and that he went overboard in this case - he honestly apologized, saying he felt too ashamed to contact me and apologize before. That note of mine broke some barriers and we eventually settled the matter once forever.
