That's actually true. The Danish and Norwegian royal families are cheap too, but I assume the Swedish Bernadotte family is the cheapest in Scandinavia, unlike e.g. the Windsors that are expensive after all.

Kroppie, I read somewhere that the royal family actually is cost effective. The royal family has an amazing advertizing value (just look at their american tour a few years ago, and the interest it sparked in american swedish descendants), as well as their space filling duties. Countries without royalty has to send their important people to useless duties such as head of state funerals, weddings and such....

If they weren't cost effective though, I'd say Down with the Monarchy!

(BTW, did you know that the first Bernadotte swore an oeath to "fight monarchy in all shapes" about ten years before agreeing to become king of sweden? )

Crap Royalist propaganda. It's based on two massive fallacies.

1- Loads of tourists see Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, etc. If we didn't have a monarch, they wouldn't come.

2- It's based on the Royal Family's Civil List income, and doesn't take into account the income from sources such as the Duchy of Cornwall. Nor does it take into account the money that could be raised by selling/renting/using more efficiently the following- Balmoral, Windsor Castle, Sandringham, Clarence House, St James' Palace, The Queen's private art collection, etc, etc, etc.

The arguments that the royal family are cost effective are either an outright lie, or are made by someone with absolutely no grounding in business or marketing.

Norway's royal family is much cheaper. It's like "Why should they get more money than normal people?!"
They get more money of course but not as much as in the class divided countries in europe.

Cybergnu: Cost effective, my ass! Their commerical value is something that its defenders brings up from time to time. I don't buy it. I don't see the need for all those "space filling duties", just get rid of them. The opening of the parlament by the king for example means virtually nothing for the political system. It's just pointless in todays world.

And obviously Jean Baptiste Bernadotte swore to fight monarchy, he was in the French republican army.

Suffering from ads?

I'm surprised they let her 'wear' that gown at the Nobel award function. Most of the laureates that attend are barely alive as it is. That outfit could have wiped most of them out with heart attacks.

Nah. Do not Abolished it. Waht would the world do without the irony of a royal dynasty founded by a king who had been a republican revolutionary, a conspiritor to regicied, and who had "Death to Tyrants" tattooed on his arse.

I kind of like the monarchy the way it is in Norway (and, I guess, Sweden and Denmark). It is nice to have a completely apolitical head of state.

Yeah it's better to have king or queen as head of state rather than some politician who has elbowed his way to the top.

Kroppie, I didn't mean duties like opening parliamnet. I mean international duties. Funerals are the most important ones, I believe. If we didn't have the Knug, we'd have to send the prime minister. Whose time would you rather waste, the guy who can't read, or the leader of the country?

(well, minor details such as Goran Persson leadership qualitites aside.)

As to the advertizing value, I don't remember where I read it... I do know that swedish international companies LOVE the royal family. Their sales usually increase quite a bit when the royal family goes abroad and flaunt the swedish colors... Which is also why the royal familys trips are usually paid for by companies such as SKF (paid for the minnesota tour), Volvo (paid for the californian trip), Bofors etc.
