Personally I find all this discipline stuff quite offputting but it does organize you beyond any notion ever thinkable to you in the past.

(please note military service is mandatory in Greece. So if you can't avoid it, enjoy it)

CompSci. Have you gone for any bioinformatics-type jobs? I'd have thought there was quite a demand for computer-literate biologists?

What would the civil service entail? Don't they have a horribly arduous admissions system too? Getting through selection is one of my major achilles heels.

civil service = strict entry requirements and i hear it's very much an 'old boys network' type of affair. still you're an oxbridge grad so that can't hurt.

seriously given everything you've said the army, navy or airforce sounds good for you (well aside from your ideological objections, but that's your own fault ). i'm sure you'd get fast tracked for officer training with a degree. it's a good solid career, you can get out and see the world, and you've said many times that there's nothing keeping you in hull.

as for your other objections, a little hard work and discipline never did anyone any harm

The admissions system depends on the grade you apply for - senior CS involves an awful lot of work middle service involves less and support grades even less. Somehow I think you can probably do a little better then a filing clerk

If you don't like writing there is actually plenty of work that involves dealing with the public (passport control for example) rather than lots of form filling (although we have enough of that).

PM me if you want more detail.

PH, just shoot yourself in the head. its a lot better than you *****ing and moaning on a forum about how youre so unemployable. I worked door to door sales and let me tell you, attitude is at least 2/3s of the sale. Even if you dont realize you have a bad attitude in interviews you do. This is what the company called "the face" Everyone but you sees "the face" You have a shite attitude and its showing in interviews.

I haven't read this thread, except for the original posting:

Your description makes you sound like a natural computer programmer. It worked for me. The best thing about programming is that you don't need to be mature and motivated as creative challenges are in front of you from the beginning.

The downside is that you are bound to burn out after a while. Also, there are no jobs out there for programmers at the moment

Not at my rate.

But it is pretty interesting, and a good sort of 'default' profession for the vaguely intelligent but undirected.

A masters degree in Comp Science might be the answer, but it would involve a ten grand loan.

Yes, I used to do programming on my old BBC I used to be able to do assembler and was pretty good at it, but that was a long time ago. And ten grand is a lot of money, not a sum I just have kicking around...

Hence the 'loan' bit. They're easy to get - I had a diabolical credit history (including the odd court summons) when I applied, and had no trouble. And I think they're deferrable if you're still unemployed at the end.

But on the other hand, once you start work, £230 a month out of your pay packet isn't fun.
