I think your confusing the Japanese flag with the Japanese anthem which is absolutely repulsive. The flag is ok. The worst flag IMO is Libya. Just....green.......

Lithuanian flag proposed in 1939 (with green Vytis cross in the middle and colors yellow and red on borders)

Confederate States of America flag (that one with blue cross with stars on red background)

Kazakhstani flag

Japanese war flag (with black dashes near the read "sun")

Former Afghanistani flag (green, white, black with that symbol on the middle)

Brazilian flag

And, of course, current Lithuanian flag

Sri Lanka's flag is pretty cool. The welsh is nice too. I like the Libyan flag for it's unbeatable simplicity.
The flag of Macedonia ...err, ah, ah ...FYROM, ...Markos put away the sword... looks good too.

The Japanese rising Sun one is cool: the Polish and Indonesian flags are both OK, as is the French Tricolor.

I dislike overly complex flags, or flags with difficult designs. Oh, and the old flag of the DRC, the Zaire flag, had a hand holding an AK-47 right in the middle of it: that and really ugly colors.
