Well, living in Imin's Uganda would be fine if..
1) You were not Asian
2) Very stupid
3) Not remotly left-wing
4) Thaught cannabalisation was fine
5) Were not Jewish
6) Were a member of Imin's tribe (only about 5-10% were)
7) Generally did not 'get in the way' in his plan of looting the country.
8) Were not from the West or Soviet block.
9) Did not mention anything about corruption, executions, starvation and dire poverty.
10) Had noting to do with the former administration, in any way.
Would any of us live through 10 years of this?

he ate people?
I always thought all Edi Amin did was be all **** the UN... i figured him being a dictator he probably ruthlessly crushed the opposition (and Africa has a lot of problems with starvation, wars, etc. already)... but was it really his fault or were these things going to happen anyway?
thanks

i would probably pick Turkey or Afghanistan as the easiest to live in... they might not be too bad for me, especially not Turkey.

I was actually living in Rwanda in 1994... of course it wasn't nice but then as a white person you weren't a "target" either. It was all between hutus and tutsis. If you were white and got in the way, then fine, you'd die. If you just pretended you didn't see anything, and just stayed at home, then you'd be about allright (but then you always have the minimal risk of stray bullets, artillery shells, etc).

Yes, Amin did eat human flesh. His ex-health minister (ironic in a sick sense) when he fled to the UK in 1974 that Amin had reported to him 'with some pride that he had eaten the flesh, organs and genitalia of his victims'. I dont think Amins victims were mere sheep.

for me, Turkey and Afghanistan would be ridiculously easy. An Arab who is morally conservative would have no problems

As said before without doubt Cambodia takes this one.
The whole population was in fear, there was nowhere to hide as all the cities were cleared and all people moved to the countryside. Any who had a university background or were considered either wealthy or intellectuals, any with any link to anyone who had been part of any previous government, any who had been teachers at any level of education were killed. Even loyal kmer rouge cadres lived in total fear of being denounced, only the top five people of the Kmer Rouge government were relatively safe.
On top of this fear, the Kmer Rouge project YEAR ZERO, which was their national policy, totally ripped apart their agriculture and people were starving, but they all had to go to work from early morning til early evening. Children were kept back during the day and a few lucky women were given babysitting duties.
Thus the WHOLE population suffered, there were not really any elite groups. Except that those who were under Kmer Rouge control before Kmer Rouge took over the whole country got slightly better treatment than the 'new ones', but they still lived in fear and witnessed the horrific crimes committed.
I remember reading about one case in one work group village, there was one middle aged man who worked hard and people thought he was retarded 'cos he spoke like he was and acted a bit stupid. After the vietnamese arrived he straightened up and started speaking normally, he was the ex-manager of one of the biggest banks in Pnom Pen.
In all of the other cases certain sectors of society or ethnic groupings did not suffer, in Cambodia all were affected.

They did more damage to the socialist cause than 150 years of capitalist propaganda. It is upsetting that we humans look of reasons to do nasty things to each other. Religion, Nationalism, Economics, Colour, Sexuality, etc.
We should all stop being so petty.

I would'nt want to be around 13th Cen. Europe before the Black Death (or after, at that)
I was reading a paper the other day- medical-type people predict that there will be a massive illness spreding across the world in about 5-10 years. It seems that these things break out on a global scale about every 100 years. The last one was in 1918-1921. It killed millions in Europe alone, but is mainly forgotten now. Pandamemics have destroyed mighty empires in the past, is it possible it could wreck our present world order? Should I start building a Jackson-ese air chamber?
