PBEM is Play By EMail - it involves each person playing their turn and forwarding a saved game to the next player via email or any other file transfer process (such as ICQ or other messaging service - which can be faster, and would probably work well in this context).

Normally PBEM games are very slow (relative to online games) because they have many players who are all online at different times, and the turns hang around waiting to be picked up for a few hours.

Then you should introduce the challenge games. 2 humans + a number of AIs. With or without ruins and wonders as you agree to.

We (the CTP-PBEMmers) have ended several games already and I have more than one time played 5 turns in the same game within 24 hours.

If we go SP, we should mod. Increase the difficulty of the AI. I just witnessed the AI attacking me by landing troops on my island with a boat They were also able to get a city and hold it for a few turns. This was done with medmod on diety.
But...
This will bring us back to our original discussion about whether or not to mod. A few voiced there opinion thourgh lack of knowledge with medmod. Well theres got to be one that deals with inproving the AI instead of enhancing the game. I think Froz mentioned AIPs. I know Ive seen a few in the CTP section here.
