no, it's not. many people feared god, and thus didn't do this. Not because they felt it was wrong in any other sense.

we'll have to agree to disagree then, IMO religion is based on the equation 'abide by the rules as stated in X and Y will happen to you'

here is the actual quote
sends shivers down my arms:Quote 35: "In fact', said Mustapha Mond, 'you're claiming the right to be unhappy.'
'All right then,' said the Savage defiantly, 'I'm claiming the right to be unhappy.'

'Not to mention the right to grow old and ugly and impotent; the right to have syphilis and cancer; the right to have too little to eat; the right to be lousy; the right to live in constant apprehension of what may happen to-morrow; the right to catch typhoid; the right to be tortured by unspeakable pains of every kind.' There was a long silence.
'I claim them all,' said the Savage at last.
Mustapha Mond shrugged his shoulders. 'You're welcome,' he said." Chapter 17, pg. 240

Ya know, I don't think that I have seen anyway put down religion in such an abrupt way as saying that God sucks. Had I seen such statements, at least without someone like GP bashing them afterward, I probably would of left this board a long time ago. Yet, generally those who say things in that way are just confused and stupid, and should be left alone to deal in their own musings.

Suffering from ads?

I fear death, but I try not to think about my mortality very much, so it doesn't really bother me. I used to think about it pretty frequently and fervently hoped (it was never what you can call a belief, I was never sure about it to any degree) for the existence of an afterlife (and therefore a deity), but learned how to deal with it 9 or 10 years ago.

I've always had a fear of death, I dont know if it is any greater then anyone elses, BUT I've had it since I was 5......I was lucky enough to realize my mortality at 5, and yes, days of crying resulted........

Whenever I think about it I feel extremley uncomftorable till I can get my mind off it....

What did I try to do to calm my fears? Religion mostly, though I now am pretty sceptal of it-no I dont think its something "sinister and EEEEVIL" as I see countless pre-teen philosophers post as they make idiots of themsleves:

"Um yah, I dont like going to church, so God sucks and religion must be corrupt!!"

You know the type, they post here constantly, am I the only one who thinks they look like fools-but never says anything?

ANYWAY I dont think religion is evil-I think if its peacefull it does some good(set peoples minds at ease, set mine at ease till I realised it proboably isnt true), I just think without more proof theres no reason to follow it.

Im getting side tracked from my point.

I was always very scared about time ticking away, and knowing one day I will die, and that might be the end of my existance....

I was thinking about death last night, and then thought about a post I made on the boards a while ago, it was something like:

"Would you want to live forever, IF forever REALLY means forever, i.e. after the heat death of the universe and you are the last thing in existance"

The worst possible fait I could think of is not death, but eternal existance.....

Forever isnt just a REALLYYYYY long time, its forever, i.e. never ending(wrap your mind around something it cant be wrapped around heh).

Suppose the Christians are right about the afterlife and God(being Jewish I dont believe that, BUT they have a "happier" afterlife then Jews, which dont really know anything about it, other thent hat its there) which is supposed to be eternal bliss forever(if your good) right?

Well EVENTUALLY you would just get SICK of the "bliss", forever is a HELL of a long time, and eventually you would just get sick of your existance, but have no way to end it.......you would then have an eternity of existence, of sensory perceptions which you desperatly want to end, but no way to do it....

What is worse then what amounts to self-inflicted psychological torture, FOREVER?

Suddenly im not so scared worried about there not being an afterlife, because the alternative(non existance) seems preferable to a painfull existance which never ends.

And if God does exist, mabey I was all wrong and the afterlife is good, but since I have no proof God exist, my mind is at ease.

WOW!

Look, all evidence (and reason) suggests that this life on Earth is the only trip you get, that the end of mortal life is the end of existence, and that awareness of anything ceases at the moment of Earthly death.

So don't live in either hope or fear of "the next world", it isn't going to happen. Calm down, relax, and work to make this existence one worth living.

Compete where competition challenges your abilities, cooperate where cooperation improves conditions of yourself and others, learn new things where the knowledge can give the next generations a better life, and be introspective when your internal thoughts can make life more understandable.

Life isn't a test and it isn't a goal. It is an experience based on birth into a physical existance.

Smell the flowers, enjoy the foods, taste the wine, do good by one's neighbors and friends, care for your family, die knowing that conciousness is a rare opportunity and that you enjoyed it.
