i think the current music industry is kind of replicating that except without all the really good bands...i mean do you really think 20 years from now your kids will be saying "linkin park was really a good band"

I agree. I suspect Ming speaks for most of us who were adults during that era. Not surprisingly, today's kids prefer the music of their time. Thirty years ago, I didn't have much use for '40s hits.

My daughter's main goal in life is to be 10 years older than me.
It's good to have goals, but they really need to be within reason.
She can answer any question on The Doors.

The 70's had a lot of "1 Hit Wonder" groups, that you may not even be able to name.

And Buck, I have to disagree on ABBA. I liked them.

The 70's were the years I seriously started to buy albums. And being a wannabee altenativo I am now stuck with crap from Genesis, Yes and all those other bands that made 25 minute songs just to show how technically perfect they were. Not to mention all that jazz-rock ****.

Thankfully punk broke out and I discovered 60's and 70's soul and I had my hair cut Thank you Lord for bands like The Specials. If I ever have to listen to another band that uses a synthesizer I swear that I will kill myself...

Today it's just teeny-bopper music or rehashing music styles from the past...

In addition to blues-rock/metal (Zeppelin, Sabbath, etc.), you've got glam (the New York Dolls, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, etc.), the punk revolution (the Clash, the Ramones, etc.), and the beginnings of hardcore (Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, etc.). Plus, you've got older bands that keep putting out great music throughout the 70's (Albert King, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, etc.). A damn fine selection as longs as you ignore most of the pop (like any other decade).

You've got to be ****in kidding, 'the stones lasted till 72'. The 70's had their share of crap just like every era. What it also had was an explosion of music styles (from disco to punk and everything in between) performed by with bands that could actually play their instruments (what a wild idea). Theres nothing like it today, not even close.

I remember deep in the seventies, standing in a roller-skating rink at a punk gig watching two bands with a line of police dogs down the centre keeping the two bands fans apart.

If you need a list from the seventies then how about

Deep Purple
Bob Marley
The Undertones
Ian Dury and the Blockheads
The Stranglers
David Bowie

Then there was the late 70's small festivals all over britain before all of the serious police heavy handedness and the fights around the Stonehenge free festival during the eighties. Unlike several of my friends I managed to avoid the Battle of the beanfield and stoney cross but I did get to castle Morton possibly the last truly great free festival

I, of course, think this decade is greater than the seventies. Mainly because the commerical side of things is astoundingly much better (on the R&B plane, mainly), but I also think much of the underground stuff measures up. Certianly the past three years have had more good music than any similar three-year period in the seventies... And this is from a guy who owns 12 David Bowie albums.

That's for sure. Anyone remember the Starland Vocal Band? In 1971 they made "Afternoon Delight" which, if you liked Abba/Carpenters/Fifth Dimension type of music, was one of the best songs ever. After that, nothing. I bought their album, and every other song on it was crap.

There was some good stuff made in the 70's (there I said it!) but the problem was it was buried by a sea of utter crap music so you really have to look. Of course you just have to look at the fashions, cars, home furnishings, pop music, and what not from the 70's to understand that for the most part the 70's can be described as an unfortunate laps in judgement.

There was tons of freakin' good music!!

I'm so tired of people saying the 70's sucked for music. These same people in a different conversation will say the 80's sucked for music. And in yet another conversation they will say the 90's sucked for music. Then what did they listen to the last 30 to 40 years!!!!!. Unless they listen to classical music, I don't listen to people that say music in a particular decade sucked.

Trust me, there is plenty of good music out there.

OK I'll name a few bands to get you started

This was the decade for heavy metal and hard rock. R&B also had some good ones as well.

Black Sabbath. It was mentioned once. But their best music was in this decade. All the Ozzy albums. They pretty much sucked after he left the band

Deep Purple- already mentioend many times. Songs like Child in Time, Fireball, Hush, too many others to mention

Blue Oyster Cult- these guys aren't mainstream, they aren't for everyone. They had some interesting stuff though.

Fleetwood mac put out their best album titled Rumours. Spawned Stevie Nicks career.

Blondie- she was kind of pop, but still had a harder style that was nice.

Led Zeppelin- 'nuff said

AC/DC!!!!!!! no one has mentioned them. The Bon Scott years were better than their newer stuff.

Electric Light Orchestra- a lot of people won't like them. I liked the classical influence in rock, so I liked them.

The Eagles- another band no one has mentioned!!

Jethro Tull- already mentioned

Lynrd Skynrd- already mentioned

I think the B-52's also got their start in this decade. They are a fun pop band

Bad Company- good British hard rock band

Foriegner- I think he came out in the 70's as well.

The Doors- The lasted until 1972 I think when Morrison died. The L.A. woman album was their last.

bob Segar

boston- they only had a few I liked. But they were a good few songs

Bruce Springsteen- he got his start in this decade. He is pop/rock and not for everyone though.

I think Budgie got their start in this decade as well. British heavy metal like this helped define modern bands like Metallica. Hence why metallica did 2 covers of budgie.

the Cars- they also got their start in the 70's I believe

Chicago- they were kind of light- but they had a few good ones


anyways I am going in alphabetical order from my playlist. I am only in the C's. So I don't intend on putting them all here

Oh absolutely, but this is why the top 10 is considered worthless nowadays, no one takes any notice, especially not if looking for good music.

A way overrated band. A lot of their faux-jazz stuff is just lame, and gives me the impression of elevator music! Deacon blues ÅSS!
I can't believe that Albert S. (fat albert connection?) doesn't know the history of 'his' music. Good god man, get with the program! Don't you know Grand Master Flash! What a genius he and the other ground breakers of hip-hop were! They all started in the seventies.
Rapper's Delight came about in what I think of as the experimental stage of hip-hop.
