Did I mention anything about allergies?

Oh, and the FDA has done such a good job up 'till now. *cough*bgh*cough*

d) This being said, most opposition to GM foods is antiscientific paranoia-based thinking. We've been messing with the food we eat for 10 000 years. Whether you do it in a lab or not makes very little difference as far as allergenic reactions/safety issues are concerned. One thing that should be vigorously enforced is that potential allergenic GM products should never be approved, even for animal consumption. It's way too easy to mix up a grain shipment with another apparently identical grain shipment.

agreed.

KH has a point in that the traits we select these crops for generally give a disadvantage in the wild. But the issue of biodiversity is a very powerful one...and quite rightly diversity of the cultivars of crop we use need to be kept high, no matter what the financial costs. To do otherwise could result in absolute and utter disaster.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I fully agree. But this is an "industrial agriculture" issue, not a GM issue.

I like Frogger's idea. "Organic Foods" or "Whole Foods" (those are laughable names because they imply that other food are inorganic or unwholesum) can be labeled as such and the rest of the food would continue to be sold as normal. Thus if Che or someone else wants to be 100% certain they haven't bought a GM food they are able to do that without penalizing everyone else on the market.

What if I don't want to spend the extra money to buy organic but I don't want GM foods. I ought to be able to have the choice. GM foods should be required to be labeled.
