Yes, I saw a doco about his life and "extended" family. Very interesting guy.

Portraits of the house slaves bear a striking resemblance to the old guy they were serving and all that, which I found really funny.

Many contradictions, libertarian and slave owner. Sad the branches of the family don't acknowledge each other to this day.

Most interesting thing for me about Monticello was he slept in a hole in the wall.

My grand uncle from 6 generations behind ambushed a stagecoach, killed the postmen and stole the mail. When he was finally caught, he was exiled to Siberia (as Finland was part of Imperial Russia in the 1800s). Documents show that he later returned to northern Finland, but we have no further information. There's a rumour that he emigrated to America and made (legally, surprisingly) a fortune there... but no evidence though.

He's probably the most interesting one - rest of the family might have done something too, but didn't get caught. And then there are always the alcoholics and the religious zealots, like in every (yes, every single one, without exceptions) Finnish family.

Michener wrote, in his life, a truly *staggering* number of best-sellers, a few of which made their way to mini-series adaptation on TV on this side o' the pond....he's become something of a role model for me in my own quest.... His books were remarkable for their vast depth of research, and epic span....good stuff!

Gary Hart is/was a politican who made an unsuccessful bid for the presidency some years ago. Cheatin' tendencies caught up with him, and some colorful stories of him, a lady named Donna Rice(?), and a yacht made the rounds, and ended his run.

IIRC, he was asked by some reporters about the affair, denied it, and the suggested the reporters trail him. They did...to his yacht named the "Monkey Business" where Ms. Rice was cavorting in a teeny bikini. Cool videos.

Nothing of any real interest to the best of my knowledge. A few criminals and thieves on my dad's side. My mum's side reads like a traveling tour of the British Isles. English intermarrying with the Scottish who had previously married with the Irish who (and this is the one point of fame that I know about) married some of the Dutch that came over with William of Orange.

At least that's what I've been told. So I'm very distantly related to the servants of Dutch royalty.
