It doesn't really happen in the west. From Gloucester to Penzance, over as far as Swindon, there's no real enmity between the towns. A spot of rivalry between Plymouth and Bristol in football, but nothing compared to the City/Gas divide.

Anyway, most definitely yes, to some extent, there is still a regional split here in the United States. White Southerners still think they should be proud that their ancestors tried to destroy our nation and rip it apart.

Of course, our Yankee ancestors initially used emancipation of slaves as a political tool in foreign relations, not out of goodwill towards blacks.

Neither side can claim to be virtuous, since the North used abolition as a higher-moral sounding justification to destroy the Confederacy. However, I'm thankful the Confederacy lost the Civil War.

The South used states' rights as a higher-moral sounding justification to preserve white supremacy and slavery.

Greece is a country full of natural borders, so it is natural for it's inahbitants to be split as well. We lived each one in his little city-state for centuries...

Nowdays we are more united than ever, thanks to our loving neighbours. However, current splits are:

North vs. South: There is a difference in dialect with borders actually traceable on a map, splitting the country in half and following roughly the pre-1912 borders.

Athens vs. Thessaloniki : The capital vs. the wannabe. The inhabitants of the last are immensely jealous that we have concentrated all the power and the wealth, they are jealous because our football clubs are stronger. We are jealous because their city is much more beautiful than ours and the food is better. We tend to use different names for the same stuff and argue about the correct term.

Helladics vs. Micrasians: The old inhabitants vs. the refugees that came from Asia Minor in 1922.

Cretans vs. the rest: They believe thay are of a seperate glorious race of people, we believe they are just gun-crazy savages (something like Americans )

Up-the-channel vs. down-the-channel (or Rumeli vs. Morea): The Corinthian gulf divides two regions that (although they are bundled together in the North vs. South split), have old grudges. Their dialect is different, and the Rumeliotes call the Moreates thieves and crooks, and get the reply that they are vulgar and avaricious.

Inside Athens: North vs. the rest, West vs. the rest, Center vs. Piraeus

Inside Crete: Chania (west) vs. Iraklio (east)

In Montgomery County, Maryland

Germantown - the greatest unincorporated spot of land on the Earth. The people are balanced in all ways, with great unity in spite of diversity.

North of Germantown - a bunch of rednecks and hillbillies who carry loaded shotguns with them in case they need to shoot dinner.

South of Germantown - rich ****** who have too much money and ecstasy. Mostly too much ecstasy. Also too damn many snipers.

Of course this is all relative, so for example Jaguar Warrior who claims to be from Bethesda most likely thinks that I'm a shotgun toting redneck, which is fine because I think he's an e-tard.
